Helping Older Persons Remain Independent for as Long as Possible.

The Local Office on Aging continues to strive to fulfill its mission of helping older persons remain independent for as long as possible.

But we can’t do it alone. Your donation today will help fill the plate of services where it is needed most.

  • $1,000 enables LOA to help more seniors with Transportation to the doctor, pharmacy, or grocery store.
  • $500 to assist one senior with In-Home Care.
  • $250 funds Center for Health & Wellness programs.
  • $100 gives eligible seniors much needed Legal Assistance.
  • $50 provides 5 people with Emergency Services.
  • $25 delivers 3 Meals on Wheels, or 2 Diner’s Club lunches.

Who does LOA help? It could be your mother, your neighbor, or it could even be you.

“Thank you for being here for us older people. It is not easy getting old!”

Outdoor Fitness Area Under Construction

LOA’s new Outdoor Fitness Area for older adults is nearing completion! Located behind LOA’s Center for Health & Wellness building, the area will include an array of exercise stations designed to help seniors improve balance, fine motor strength, flexibility, and range of motion.

The Outdoor Fitness Area has been made possible thanks to a generous $20,000 AARP Community Challenge Grant. “We are incredibly proud and humbled that AARP selected LOA for this investment. AARP is a nationwide leader in making communities more livable, and we are honored that they see the value this project will bring.” – Ron Boyd, President and CEO of LOA.

We are excited to share our progress with you and look forward to sharing more updates of the Outdoor Fitness Area in the future!

We would welcome your donations of any pull-on style adult incontinence products, in any size, such as Depends.

Items can be dropped off Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. at LOA’s main office: 4932 Frontage Road NW, Roanoke, VA 24019. When you arrive, please call (540) 345-0451, and we’ll be happy to help you unload your donations. Thank you!

Volunteer Spotlight

LOA relies on our dedicated volunteers to keep VICAP running: the Virginia Insurance Counseling and Assistance Program (VICAP) exists to offer free, unbiased counseling for Medicare, and one of our most dedicated volunteers is Russell Schiavone. Russell is a volunteer now, but he worked for LOA as an Emergency Services Program Specialist too!

"I started looking into how Medicare works long before my 65th birthday because I wanted to have a plan in place before that day arrived," he says. "But I was surprised that many of my friends had no idea how Medicare works and were getting little support from their employer HR departments. I joined LOA's VICAP team as volunteer certified Medicare counselor in 2015, knowing there was a big need for these services. I offer free, unbiased and confidential counseling on how to apply, the two primary Medicare options, and savings programs available for some enrollees. It is satisfying to know I am helping people understand the intricacies of Medicare, which can be very overwhelming to some individuals."

Russell is also a devoted Community Ambassador for AARP Virginia. Thank you, Russell, for all you do to help senior Virginians!
