Volunteer Spotlight

Every month, a dedicated band of volunteers spends the morning folding and stuffing letters that are sent to all Meals on Wheels clients: Linda Barton, and Virgie Martin with her son Robert and daughter. We are delighted to have had an extra special helper this summer. Alice, who is from Germany, volunteered her time while visiting with her grandmother. Thank you, Alice, for helping your grandmother, and many thanks to Linda, Virgie, Robert, and family for helping LOA!

Gifts and Grants update

Recently the LOA was excited to be awarded generous grants and gifts from the following:

  • Vinton Moose Lodge Family Center #1121
  • Carilion Clinic
  • Diane Goode

Thank you to all of you - the people, businesses, churches, and clubs - who made a gift to LOA recently.

Your financial support helps keep our programs going!

Thank you to the Roanoke Valley Star Quilters Guild for their generous donation of 16 beautiful quilts! The Star Quilters Guild have donated their work twice this year to LOA’s clients, and we truly appreciate their support of our senior neighbors.

LOA is deeply grateful to be a charity beneficiary of this year's Roanoke Greek Festival! We are so grateful to our neighbors at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Roanoke VA for generously supporting older adults in need in our community. We hope to see you at the festival this September 15, 16, and 17.

We are sad to report...

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our long-time receptionist, Shirley Tirico.

Shirley was just a few months shy of her 20th anniversary of working at LOA. Prior to LOA, Shirley worked for many years at First National Exchange Bank. She was a ray of sunshine to everyone who entered our office. She was dedicated to LOA’s mission and was a driving force for many of our fundraising efforts, especially, Let’s Give Lunch. She was also dedicated to her church and to God, her beloved Frank, and to her sorority sisters. Shirley loved people; meeting them, getting to know them, and helping them.

Her beautiful smile greeted everyone, and she was a friend to all. It was Shirley’s desire to be a part of the LOA family until her time to rest with the heavenly angels. She accomplished this goal and more as she will always be in our hearts as a part of the LOA family. We extend our sincere condolences to all of her family and friends. She will be greatly missed.
