New accessibility website features
Over recent years we have worked hard to increase accessibility to our resources. Current features include resources available as a book, video book (with closed captioning) as well as online self directed learning modules which include audio content.
We are currently working with support from the Canadian Mental Health Service (CMHA) - Ontario branch to add functionality so that worksheets and work books can be accessed by screen reader software.
We hope to introduce the same approach to our UK - based service later this year significantly benefiting users who face accessibility challenges.
The new programming allows access to the three most popular accessibility platforms:
-
JAWS for Windows: JAWS for Windows is a popular screen reader produced by VFO Group (formerly Freedom Scientific). Available since the early 1990s, it has a large user base. Tech support is provided Monday through Friday. More info on JAWS can be found on the Freedom Scientific website.
-
Non-Visual Desktop Access (NVDA): NVDA is a free and open-source screen reader for Windows. It is updated on a regular basis and has a large user base around the world. Since the software is free, tech support options are limited and are mainly provided through online forums. More info about NVDA can be found on the NV Access website.
-
Apple Voiceover: Apple Voiceover is a screen reader built into Macintosh computers since MacOS 10.4. For more info about Voiceover, visit the Apple website.
New - Reclaim Your Life (RYL) large class resources
NHS Lanarkshire has commissioned a version of our popular Reclaim Your Life (RYL) course to be delivered in a large non interactive group setting.
Reclaim Your Life is our approach to helping people living with long term physical health conditions rediscover ways of living their life more fully despite their condition. The new version of the course is deigned to be taught in a lecture style format in person or online.
The course is made up of five sessions covering topics:
1. Understanding how we/others respond to illness
2. Your Life is More than Your Illness
3. Coping with symptoms
4. Confidently relating to other people
5.Reclaiming your life Revision and next steps
This development is building on previous work we have done such as the Mental Health aspect of diabetes through NHS England; and NHS Education for Scotland training NHS staff to deliver RYL for long term conditions, disability, pain and fatigue.
