Trainers and Consultants Direct (TCD)


TextNAVCA's TCD website was launched 2 years ago this week. Since moving to the new website, numbers using the site has increased and we have been told that it has become much easier to find the relevant support people are looking for. Have a look at the TCD site.

 

CORE 2011
CORECORE 2011 is taking place on 16 and 17 June in Nottingham. This is the best opportunity of the year for Chief Officers of NAVCA members to get together and share ideas and learning. There are still bursaries remaining to enable you to attend CORE 2011. The scheme is open to all chief officers of a NAVCA member with an income below �250,000.
 
Deadline for bursary applications 13 May.

Ealing cuts
Local voluntary organisations and community groups in Ealing have been successful in getting council budget cuts to the sector reduced from a proposed 30% and 35% in the next two years to 11% and 21% respectively.  Proposed PCT cuts have also been reduced. Andy Roper, chair of Ealing Community Network and chief executive of Ealing CVS, said: "This shows what can be achieved by a leading CVS, a strong community network and a local council and PCT willing to engage with us" 

Big Society AwardsBig Society Awards
NAVCA members are asked to think about how they can benefit from the Big Society Awards. These were launched last November by the Prime Minister, are a way of recognising and celebrating individuals, businesses, local authorities, charities, community groups and other organisations who illustrate the Big Society in action. NAVCA members should consider nominations. Deadline for the next round of nominations is 23 May.

Big Society Bank
The Cabinet Office has endorsed the Outline Proposal for the Big Society Bank. This gives the green light to proceed with the implementation of the proposal. 

JustTextGiving
JustGiving and Vodafone have launched a service to allow fundraisers and charities to receive donations by text message without incurring set-up or network charges.

Protecting Playing Fields
sport england
Sport England has launched Protecting Playing Fields, a �10 million National Lottery fund to enhance local playing fields, or create new sports pitches. They 
will be investing  �20,000 and �50,000 in hundreds of projects that will create, 
improve and protect playing fields. Anyone interested in applying should visit sportengland.org/funding for more details. 

Living Streets respond to road safety strategy
Living Streets say they welcome measures to give police greater powers to crack down on dangerous driving but want it to be part of a wider package of measures to tackle dangerous driving, including surveillance and slower speed limits, in order to improve pedestrian safety and the quality of our streets in the UK.

Trusthouse Charitable Foundation
The Trusthouse Charitable Foundation gives grants for running costs or one-off capital costs to charities and not-for-profit organisations that tackle urban deprivation or rural issues. The grants available are in three categories: under �5,000 (fast track), �5,000 to �10,000 (small), and �10,000 to �30,000 (large). Applications can be submitted at any time of the year. 

British Red Cross's Positive Images Programme
Grants of up to �1,000 are available to support activities that promote positive attitudes towards vulnerable migrants. The grants range from �50 to �1,000 and they available to schools, colleges, universities, youth groups and student groups working with young people aged 12 to 25. The deadline for applications is 17 June. 

Salvation Army looking for partners
The Salvation Army has been selected by the Ministry of Justice as Prime Contractor to manage the delivery of accommodation and support for victims of all types of trafficking; sexual exploitation, domestic servitude and forced labour. To achieve this they need to work with partners, and are keen to reach small and very small specialist providers who might be able to help to deliver the contract.

Funding for Music Making Activities
Youth Music has announced its grant making programme is open for applications. Grants of between �5,000 and �30,000 are available to support projects that provide music-making activities for children and young people in support of Youth Music's goals. The next closing date for applications is the 27th June.

Hilden Charitable Fund
The Hilden Charitable Fund has announced they are now accepting applications at any time. Within the UK, the Hilden Charitable Fund makes grants to projects that address disadvantages, notably by supporting causes which are less likely to raise funds from public subscriptions. In particular, the Fund wants to support projects that address homelessness; asylum seekers and refugees; community based initiatives for disadvantaged young people; penal affairs; and overseas. 

Funding to Improve Local Communities
Groups of individuals as well as small community and voluntary groups within the UK that want to improve their communities can apply for funding through the Wakeham Trust. The Trust are particularly interested in supporting; neighbourhood projects; community arts projects; projects involving community service by young people; projects set up by those who are socially excluded.  

The Tudor Trust 
The Tudor Trust has a particular interest in helping smaller, community-led organisations which work directly with people who are at the margins of society. You do not need to be a registered charity in order to apply for funding.  

JP Getty Jnr Charitable Trust
The Trust supports projects which help to relieve poverty, support disadvantaged people, and effect long-term change where help is not readily available from the public or private purse. It also provides funding for the arts, and towards the conservation of the natural and built environment. Grants are between �10,000 and �250,000 over a period of one to three years. Grants of up to �5,000 are also available for smaller charities.

NHS listening exercise
The government want to hear views on the modernisation of the health and care system. Have your say and participate in the engagement process. You can get involved with the NHS listening exercise in a number of different ways. They promise to listen and make any changes necessary to build a stronger NHS. 

learningLearning and development
Adult & Community Learning Fund
A �2.25 million fund is available from the Skills Funding Agency to support adult and community learning activities in England. The fund is administered by The National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE). The maximum amount for any bid is �75,000 and the minimum is �10,000. Deadline June 10 

Skild
Skild logo in greenThe Skild learning programme for 2011-12 lists courses up to the of March 2012. All the courses are designed for development workers, community organisers and community development workers who give practical support to local voluntary organisations and community groups. We run our core programme in a number of regional centres. If the locations listed are not convenient, we can offer courses locally. A child-centred system
The Department for Education has published Professor Munro's independent review into child protection in England. Recommendations include: a shift in emphasis in Serious Case Reviews from what happened to why; keeping experienced social workers on the frontline; and keeping child protection services local, rather than focusing on central government targets. 

Child Poverty
The Local Government Group (LG Group) commissioned NFER to assess local authorities' progress in meeting the duties placed on them by the 2010 Child Poverty Act, specifically the requirement to complete a local needs assessment and a joint local child poverty strategy.

Child Poverty and Social Mobility Strategies 
NCVYS logoNCVYS has published a briefing paper on the Government's Child Poverty and Social Mobility Strategies. NCVYS express a concern that the strategies offer little in the way of new policy to tackle the problems of child poverty or low social mobility.

Children's age limit on vetting and barring scheme
The government has changed its mind on plans to move the age limit on vetting and barring arrangements for children's professionals to only cover those working with up to 16 year olds. They will be keeping the cut off age at 18.

Using Community Development to support small community groups, voluntary organisations and networks in your local area. Previous courses have filled quickly so you are advised to book early if you wish to attend. 

These courses are proving very popular so you are advised to book up early.

Womens Resource Centre - Consultation Event.
The Government Equalities Office is consulting on womens' engagement with government and the new gender architecture that will replace the Women's National Commission.
