Upcoming Summer Events...





Join fellow alumni for an evening of casual conversation and networking on Thursday, July 27 from 5 to 7 pm at the White Oak Tavern, Ellicott City. Plan to drop in for a bit, or stay awhile - no advanced registration required. We hope to see you there!

Plan to join Leadership and alum, Josh Wasilewski, LP '16/LE '15, Principal of Howard County's newest high school, Guilford Park High School, on Tuesday, August 8 from 1 to 3 pm to go behind-the-scenes for a talk and tour of this impressive campus. Participants should plan to dress comfortably and be ready to walk!

More details will be shared soon about the nomination process for both these awards, along with highlights about the event and sponsorship opportunities. Tickets on sale beginning August 1.

Loyola University Maryland is excited to announce the kickoff of Leadership Essentials 2024, a six-month leadership development program for emerging leaders offered through Loyola University Maryland, in collaboration with Leadership Howard County. From December 2023 through June 2024, a diverse cohort of approximately 25 individuals from the private, public, and nonprofit sectors will strengthen their leadership skills through full-day, skill-building sessions, leadership coaching, and a community service project.

Announcements - Recognitions - Member Moves

Congratulations to Roy, LP '04, & Susan Appletree, Co-Coordinators for Prepare for Success (PFS), who recently received the CommUNITY hand of Hope award. PFS distributes most of its backpacks to the HCPSS, but also supports the clients of a number of amazing local non-profits. Read more.


Congratulations to Karen Cherry, LP '15, who was first runner-up for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Maryland Visionary of the Year and also the recipient of the Research Pillar Award. Kudos to Karen for raising over $156,000 - along with the other candidates who collectively raised a record-setting $627,318.


Welcome Theresa Forgét, LP '23, to the Leadership Howard County Board of Directors.


Condolences to the family of Peter Horowitz, LP '93, who recently passed away on June 21, 2023 following a long battle with cancer. Read obituary.

Community Events - Volunteer Opportunities



The popular free kids’ event series, Good Kid-izen, is held every other Saturday, from 10 am to noon, through August 19 at Color Burst Park.  Click here for details, the full schedule and to make reservations.

The first annual DoodleHATCH Festival is coming Saturday & Sunday, August 19 - 20, to the Long Reach Village Center. This one of a kind, family-friendly event will feature fantasy art attractions, live music, arts and crafts vendors, "real" mermaids, a "live" unicorn, and more. Click here for details.

The Howard County Department of Community Resources & Services, in conjunction with the Children & Families' Office of the Local Children's Board, is hosting the Unity in the Community Resource Fair Saturday, July 29 from 11 am to 3 pm at the East Columbia Library Park, 6600 Cradlerock Way, Columbia, Click here for more information.

HCPSS is hosting a job fair Saturday, July 29 from 10 am to 3 pm at Burleigh Manor Middle School, 4200 Centennial Lane, Ellicott City. Advanced registration is required, please click here; individuals will have the opportunity to apply for available employment opportunities and may have the chance to interview with hiring managers or school administrators. All attendees are encouraged to complete an online application prior to attending the job fair. Human resources staff will be on site to assist attendees, as needed. Interested candidates may learn more online about all HCPSS vacancies and employment opportunities.   


The Department of Planning & Zoning continues to seek the community's input on HoCo By Design, Howard County's long-range, visionary document that guides land use, growth, and development decisions every ten years.
