Class News - Member Updates - Announcements August 2023

LHC's FY24 calendar is taking shape and we're excited about the energy being generated around the many programs and initiatives that are being planned for the upcoming year. Mark your calendars, register, and we look forward to seeing you soon!

Tickets are now available for Leadership Howard County's (LHC's) Illuminating 

Leadership event on Thursday, November 16 from 5:30 to 8:30 pm at HCC's Horowitz Center. This can't miss, fun and entertaining event will recognize some of our community's great leaders including, Key Leader, Zack Shariff, LP '12, and 2023's recipients of the Best Class Ever (BCE), and LHC's new Emerging Leader and Corporate Community Impact Awards. Award submissions and BCE point submissions are due September 30. More details about the event, award nomination forms sponsorship opportunities, and to purchase tickets may be found at the link below. Earliest-bird tickets are available now at $100 through September 15. Beginning September 16, tickets will increase to $115 through October 31 and, November 1 through November 16, tickets will be $130. For non-profits with less than 25 employees, tickets are $95.

Drop in to Union Jacks/Columbia, Tuesday, August 29 from 4:30 to 6:30 pm [10400 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia]. Come for a bit, or stay for awhile... we just hope to see you there! No advanced registration required.

Leadership Howard County (LHC) is looking forward to its first "Service Friday" on Friday, September 8 from 10 am to 12 pm. There are many ways members may participate from donating supplies, or funds to purchase supplies, to volunteering time to assemble backpacks at The Rouse Exhibit Center, located at 10215 Wincopin Circle, Suite 200, Columbia. 

 Please note that the Exhibit Center is NOT a drop-off location, only an assembly site.

School supplies may be dropped off at the LHC offices on Tuesdays - Wednesdays - Thursdays from 10 am to 2 pm. Please email Karen Bryant if you need to arrange an alternate drop off day/time. Let us know how you can help by accessing the Sign-Up Genius; suggestion links are noted below, fyi.

Leadership Alumni went "back to school" during the recent This Just In session at Guilford Park High School. Many thanks to Principal, Joshua Wasilewski, LP '16 & LE '15, who provided an excellent talk and tour of this state-of-the-art campus.

Loyola University Maryland is looking forward to welcoming a diverse cohort of dynamic emerging leaders for Leadership Essentials 2024. The program will include:

• Skill-building sessions: The full cohort will meet 1-2 times/month for full-day sessions on leadership topics such as self-awareness, communication skills, high performing teams, conflict management, and more (program schedule).
• Leadership coaching: Participants will meet one-on-one with a leadership coach twice/month to discuss personal and professional goals, explore challenges at work, and create an action plan. Coaches will help participants hone critical thinking skills, strengthen relationships, and manage conflict.
• Community Impact Projects: Teams from the cohort will support a local nonprofit and further develop their teamwork, project management, and communication skills.

Tom Burtzlaff, LP '13, recently shared the great health news that his brain cancer remains stable; his story was also featured in the June 2023 newsletter of Inspire, an online support community. The first annual DoodleHATCH Festival is coming Saturday & Sunday, August 19 - 20, to the Long Reach Village Center. This one of a kind, family-friendly event will feature fantasy art attractions, live music, arts and crafts vendors, "real" mermaids, a "live" unicorn, and more. Click here for details.

Nominations are being requested for the Howard County Veterans Day Parade grand marshal, an honorary title bestowed on someone who represents the values and morals of Howard County’s community of veterans and military families. Nominations are due by September 8 and the parade will take place November 12, 2023. More details ...

Board members are sought for the Howard County Concert Odyssey, a not-for-profit organization that offers the Howard County Community and greater region a broad scope of music programs spanning from the Baroque-era to the present. Please contact Nancy (Szlasa) Mason, LP '04, for more information.

("MCRC"), a local Howard County non-profit organization that provides widely accessible and affordable conflict resolution services and strengthens communication among both residents and organizations in the County.
