Summer Session's in Full Swing!

There's never a dull moment at LFLA! Students were welcomed back for the month of June to partake in Summer Session classes in an effort to stay ahead in learning. LFLA students entering 1st grade through 9th grade are working on literacy, mathematics, and more to prepare them for next school year.

Celebrating Juneteenth!

Elementary and middle school students celebrated the Juneteenth holiday in spectacular fashion! On June 18th, elementary students painted African masks, learned how to make model African drums, created bracelets out of rolled paper beads, practiced hair braiding, and participated in a West African dance lesson led by Sierra Mason, LFLA Class of 2019.

On June 21st, middle school students invited their families to join them to celebrate Juneteenth and learn more about LFLA’s counseling and support services, as well as local resources available to them outside of LFLA. The event also featured  food trucks, face painting, a bounce house, snow cones, ice cream, games, and crafts for everyone to enjoy, plus an African dance and musical performance from Better Family Life’s Kuumba Youth Performance Ensemble.

Middle School Book Club Year-End Reviews

A reflective note from Ms. Tea Williams, 8th grade science teacher and middle school book club sponsor, on the evolution of the book club this school year:

Throughout the past year, our middle school book club has been on a wild ride filled with bookish adventures and deep discussions. With each book we tackled, we dove headfirst into vibrant worlds, met quirky characters, and pondered over many themes. From heart-pounding mysteries to heartwarming coming-of-age tales, our book choices covered a smorgasbord of tastes among our crew. Watching our members go from reluctant readers to book butterflies was pure magic. Some started off shy around books, while others were bookworms by design, but as we flipped through pages together, a spell was cast - everyone caught the reading bug!

Apart from our regular meetings, we spiced up our book club life with fun activities like a festive white elephant book exchange at our holiday bash and our epic end-of-year book hunt in the school garden. Casual coffee hangouts and bargain treasure hunts at the Dollar Tree added an extra sprinkle of joy to our bond. Whether we were sipping cocoa or raiding the snack aisle on a budget, every moment was a blast. Through these wacky adventures and tight knit connections, our middle school book club not only lit a fire for reading but also stitched unforgettable memories and friendships that will enrich our lives for years to come.

LFLA Middle School students who participated in this year's book club share their year-end reviews about their favorite genres and books.
