A DREAM DEFERRED
Dear LD2 North Phoenix DEMs and Friends,
Tomorrow, we recognize an important Federal holiday in our nation - Juneteenth.
Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved people in Texas on June 19, 1865, which occurred over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.
Which occurred over two years after.
Two years after.
Two years. After.
As Democrats, we believe that when legislation is passed, it must be implemented. This wasn't the case for ending the enslavement era in our history.
Juneteenth serves as a poignant reminder of the unfinished fight for justice. It was a "dream deferred" (as Langston Hughes described), a part of our history that demands our unwavering dedication to accountability, learning from past mistakes, and taking decisive corrective action.
To honor the injustices of the past and to recognize this significant part of history, we must:
- Unveil the untold truth with accuracy, particularly when it comes to Juneteenth.
- Support Black-Owned Businesses.
- Actively listen and learn from Black Americans who endure the daily impacts of systemic racism.
- Reflect this Juneteenth, and every day, to more deeply understand and acknowledge the profound pain courageously endured and resisted by the Black community.
It is through this reflection that we foster empathy, ignite change, and create a more inclusive future. Together, let us forge a path that uproots inequality, fosters justice, and ensures equality for all.
In solidarity,
Meg Patel, Ed.D.
