February 23, 2024
Greetings Tiger Students and Families,
As we approach the arrival of spring sports and embrace the energy they bring, it's crucial to remember the importance of maintaining focus on academics. We find ourselves three weeks into the second semester, a time when enthusiasm for extracurricular activities might overshadow the commitment to schoolwork. However, I urge both students and parents alike to recognize the significance of striking a balance between sports and academics.
Participating in spring sports undoubtedly offers numerous benefits - physical fitness, teamwork, and personal growth, to name a few. These experiences contribute greatly to holistic development and are deserving of celebration. Yet, let us not forget that academic success lays the foundation for future endeavors.
Students, your dedication to school events and attendance matters more than you may realize. Attending classes daily ensures you remain engaged with the material being taught and fosters a sense of responsibility towards your education. Each lesson, discussion, and assignment play a pivotal role in shaping your understanding and preparing you for academic challenges ahead.
Parents, your support in encouraging regular school attendance and involvement in school activities is invaluable. By prioritizing education alongside extracurricular pursuits, you reinforce the message that academic achievement is a priority. Your guidance empowers students to manage their time effectively and prioritize their commitments.
As we embark on this exciting season of spring sports, let us remember to uphold our responsibilities as students and parents. Embrace the opportunities presented by extracurricular activities but do so with a commitment to academic excellence. Stay engaged in school events, attend classes daily, and maintain open lines of communication with teachers and coaches.
Together, let's ensure that this season is not only marked by athletic achievements but also by academic growth and success. By striking a harmonious balance between sports and academics, we can set ourselves up for a fulfilling and prosperous future.
Go Tigs,
Mr. Ivan Corley

SAT Day for Juniors
On Wednesday, March 13, all Juniors will be taking the SAT online (students will need to bring their computer fully charged that day). All other grades will follow a regular Wednesday bell schedule, although some classes on the 3rd floor will take place in rooms different from where they normally are (the affected teachers will inform students about the changes the days before the test).
On March 6, we will be doing a technology update and test of the SAT app (Bluebook) in 11th grade social studies classes. Students will need to bring their laptop on March 6 and every day until the exam because the app will be doing updates up until test day.
Juniors will report to their assigned room by 7:50am. We are encouraging Juniors to get a good night’s sleep the night before, eat a good breakfast the day of, and remember to bring pencils, water, a snack, and a calculator if you have one to bring (we have a limited supply). Room assignments and movements will be clearly posted and communicated to students at school. Juniors will attend Lunch, 5th, and 6th period after the test.
Running Start Juniors are all pre-registered to take the SAT, if it works with your college schedule (there is no alternate time/day for this exam). NewTech Juniors will also stay at LC and take the SAT.
Official SAT Practice on Khan Academy uses your PSAT/NMSQT score to create a customized SAT study plan with sample questions that focus on areas where they need help.
You will receive detailed feedback on your score to identify areas of strength and growth.
All the Best Tigers on March 13, SAT Day!

A 19-year-old man has just stood trial for the fatal stabbing of his father. "He doesn't stand a chance," mutters the guard as the 12 jurors are taken into the bleak jury room. It looks like an open-and-shut case - until one of the jurors begins opening the others' eyes to the facts. "This is a remarkable thing about democracy," says the foreign-born juror, "that we are notified by mail to come down to this place - and decide on the guilt or innocence of a man; of a man we have not known before. We have nothing to gain or lose by our verdict. We should not make it a personal thing." But personal it does become, with each juror revealing his or her own character as the various testimonies are re-examined, the murder is re-enacted, and a new murder threat is born before their eyes! Tempers get short and arguments grow heated. The jurors' final verdict and how they reach it - intense scenes that will electrify your audience and keep them on the edge of their seats - add up to a fine, mature piece of dramatic literature, an experience not to miss!

LC Art Show
Save the date: LC Alumni & Student Art Show and Sale - May 11 & 12 in the LC Commons. The Class of 1966 is organizing a fundraiser to include alumni from other classes. Our theme is “Building a Legacy”. They want to bring all alumni together to create annual donors for scholarships to The LC Tiger Fund. The Fund gives scholarships to students who have experienced adversity and/or hardships in their lives, have earned good grades through high school, have participated in school and community activities and want to continue their education past high school but have financial needs.
NOW WE NEED ARTISTS - We are searching for anyone who graduated from LC to be part of this worthwhile cause. Please email me at dalfano66@gmail.com with names and phone numbers and/or email addresses of anyone you know who is an artist and went to LC. We will then contact them. We are looking for donations to 100% benefit the fund, or donations where the fund and the artist will split the proceeds. Go here for more information.
Here is an early look at some of the art that will be for sale:

Tiger Fund Scholarship
The Lewis & Clark Tiger Fund Scholarship was started by the LC Class of 1966 in 2006 in order to recognize an LC senior who has overcome personal and/or life difficulties and has made a commitment to furthering his/her education after graduation from Lewis & Clark High School. We know that there are many students who have potential for college success but often get overlooked for scholarship assistance because their GPA did not exceed a 3.5 minimum required for scholarship consideration. We also know that character and desire to improve play a large part in future success in school and life.
Two scholarships will be awarded in 2024 - each will be for $1500. This scholarship is ONLY open to LC Seniors, so don't miss your opportunity to apply. The deadline is April 30. Apply here.

Graduation Honors
At graduation, all Spokane Public Schools use the Latin Honors system to honor our top graduates. This system recognizes the top students using weighted grade point averages. Students have the ability to get three different levels of recognition: Summa Cum Laude (4.3 weighted GPA and above), Magna Cum Laude (4.1-4.299 weighted GPA), and Cum Laude (3.8-4.099 weighted GPA) - GPAs will not be rounded up. These are the same designations that colleges across the nation use to recognize top students. Latin Honors will be based on all high school credits through the end of 1st semester.
Weighted grades are calculated by providing higher points for grades earned in Honors courses and still higher points for grades earned in AP courses:
- Unweighted Courses: A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0
- Honors Courses: A=4.5, B=3.5, C=2.5, D=1.5, F=0
- AP Courses A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, F=0
- Because SPS uses a +/- grading scale, the above table is only a sampling of options. The easiest way for students to calculate the weighted grade point average is to add .5 to the GPA for honors classes and a 1.0 for Advanced Placement classes.

FAFSA/WASFA Is Open
Here's why completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or Washington Application for State Financial Aid (WASFA) is essential:
🌟 Funding Access:

🎓 Scholarship Gateways:
- Numerous scholarships hinge on FAFSA or WASFA completion.
💡 Institutional Aid Eligibility:
- FAFSA details may determine eligibility for coveted institutional aid.
🚀 Early Advantage:
- Apply early for priority consideration; some aid operates on a first-come, first-served basis.
💰 Financial Insight:
- Examine your family's financial landscape for personalized aid packages.
- FAFSA opens doors to affordable federal student loans.
💼 Work-Study Prospects:
- The FAFSA paves the way for work-study programs, marrying work experience with financial support.
