LA Times Article Highlights Puppymill Laundering Problem in California

Today, the LA Times published an in-depth article on the underground market for puppy-mill bred animals. As the article shows, this kind of activity is illegal but enforcing these laws can be difficult. Perpetrators are shifty and willing to go to great lengths to continue profiteering off of cruelty.

It is incredibly important to re-up efforts to educate the public on the suffering they are supporting when they buy a purebred animal. People who buy a purebred are easily duped into thinking the animal is coming from a "reputable" breeder - 99.99% of the time that isn't the case. As much as they might have good intentions, their money goes to perpetuating this cruel business model.

Please remind your family and friends - adopt from a shelter!

Also, do not "rescue" from any group that is not a well-respected and a known rescue organization. Many unscrupulous brokers masquerade as "rescues" to dupe less informed people looking for a pet. If they are asking for any fee over $500, be VERY suspect! You can also ask your local shelter if they know the rescue to be legitimate.

REMINDER #1

CALL TO ACTION!

AB 3162 and AB 1983 are officially on the Governor's desk!

Governor Newsom has until September 30th to sign both into law or veto.

AB 1983 will fund spay and neuter programs and AB 3162 will proactively ban octopus farming and the sale of farmed octopus in the state.

The Governor MUST hear from all of us. He needs to know there is support for this legislation. He needs to hear from you!

Please either call or use the Governor's contact page to send your support for both bills!

If you choose to call, the general switchboard number is: 916-445-2841

Better yet, go to the Governor's website, and follow the prompts. You MUST go through the process for each bill individually.
