April 2017

With spring comes renewed energy and hope. Read on for inspiration from landscape architect and activist Billy Fleming. Following the November election, with a few friends, a pen, and a cocktail napkin, Billy helped start Indivisible, now a 6,000-chapter organization. Plus, meet our 2017 Olmsted Scholars who are using their financial awards to tackle issues of environmental justice and literacy and remind yourself of the legacy of a lifetime's work when you read the announcement for the 2017 LAF Medal and LAF Founders' Award recipients.  Know you make a difference.

This weekend, if you want to get active, walk the talk and connect with others, join one of the Peoples Climate Movement marches happening across the globe on April 29. See you out there!

Five $2,500 Teaching Grants Available for Fall 2017

Last year the Landscape Architecture Accreditation Board (LAAB) included "landscape performance" in its revised standards, which take effect this fall.To help university landscape architecture programs integrate landscape performance into their curriculum, LAF is offering five $2,500 grants to select faculty for the Fall 2017 semester/term. Applications are due June 15. Grant recipients will develop, test, and evaluate models to bring landscape performance into standard course offerings, such as research methods and design studios.

It has been six busy years since 2011 Olmsted Scholar Billy Fleming graduated with his BLA from the University of Arkansas. We touched base with this former White House staffer and rising design activist to learn about his work in public service and get his take on the agency of landscape architects in today's political environment. "My design ambitions are built around...the geographical breadth of my impact and how much of it is focused on the most vulnerable people and places. Those kinds of goals require an engagement with politics that's been absent from landscape architecture for far too long."
