Beat the Heat: FREE Air Conditioners for Seniors and More!

Three women smile standing next to their portable air conditioning units.

It can be difficult to stay cool in extreme heat during the summer months, especially for high-risk seniors. With that in mind, we are holding Cool LA Heat Relief for Seniors events throughout the City. The first event was held on July 15 at the Watts Labor Community Action Committee Center. About 250 portable room air conditioners were given free of charge to LADWP customers age 60+ who pre-qualified for the giveaway.

Join us at our next Cool LA Heat Relief for Seniors events on August 26 in Pacoima and on September 9 in Lincoln Park to learn how to beat the heat and sign up for utility discounts and rebates.

Qualifying seniors may be eligible to receive a FREE portable room air conditioner, while supplies last! RSVP is required and space is limited. To sign up and get details on the requirements to receive an air conditioner, go to LADWP.com/HeatRelief2024 or call (213) 367-9016.

Stormwater Capture Parks Program Gets the Green Light

The Los Angeles Board of Water and Power Commissioners recently voted to approve the Stormwater Capture Parks Program, a monumental interagency agreement that paves the way to capture approximately 587 million gallons of water annually. This innovative program aims to collect rainwater and urban runoff at nine parks in the East San Fernando Valley. These stormwater capture projects will help replenish the San Fernando Groundwater Basin, improve water quality in the Los Angeles River, reduce local flooding, and provide recreational and environmental benefits to the community through related park improvements.

Graphic depicting the process of capturing stormwater. Rain falls onto a park and goes into an inlet from storm drains where it goes into a pretreatment area, then into an infiltration gallery, before filtering through the ground to enter the San Fernando Groundwater Basin.

Additionally, the projects could also store other sources of water, such as future recycled water and imported water. This could become a crucial advantage during future dry seasons.

Major funding for the program comes from the Measure W Safe Clean Water Program, approved overwhelmingly by voters in 2018.

This opportunity can contribute to a healthier, more sustainable environment.
