SCIL has received complaints from concerned supporters in recent years about the business practices of The Wagmor, a for-profit entity, and Wagmor Pets, a nonprofit. These concerns have centered on suspicions that The Wagmor has been flouting AB 485, the SCIL-sponsored law passed in 2017 that bans sales of mill-bred dogs, cats and rabbits in pet stores. Additionally, a class action lawsuit filed late in 2022 against Wagmor accuses it of violating a bill SCIL supported in 2019, AB 2152, which restricts paying brokers or breeders for the animals or receiving compensation over $500 for any adoption fees.
On June 21, the LA Times published a story on the controversies surrounding Wagmor Pets, with a quote from SCIL founder and president Judie Mancuso. You can also read a pdf of the article by clicking the picture above.
