Acclaimed singer-songwriter Parker Millsap has shared “So Far Apart,” the latest single from his eagerly awaited new album, Wilderness Within You, available on CD, LP, and digital download via Okrahoma Records on Friday, May 12. Co-written with close friend and fiddler Daniel Foulks, the track is joined by an official companion music video directed by Austin Leih, premiering today on YouTube.
“About 10 months into the pandemic, Daniel came over to my house and we talked about separation,” says Millsap about the writing of “So Far Apart.” “Separation for medical reasons, separation for industrial reasons, separation by means of suburbia, separation by means of drywall, separation from our animal selves, separation from our food systems...you know...the modern condition. We jammed on the idea and came up with this song.”

Millsap – who recently wrapped a series of dates supporting Patty Griffin – will celebrate Wilderness Within You with a wide-ranging live schedule including a solo acoustic headline run set to begin tonight, March 15, at New Orleans, LA’s Chickie Wah Wah. A full band headline run follows, kicking off with a special album release show at Nashville, TN’s Basement East on May 12 and then traveling into early summer. Highlights include visits to such legendary venues as West Hollywood, CA’s Troubadour (June 23) and Pioneertown, CA’s world-famous Pappy & Harriet’s (June 25), as well as a festival appearance at San Luis Obispo, CA’s Live Oak Music Festival (June 25). For complete details and ticket availability, please see www.parkermillsap.com/tour.
The follow-up to 2021’s Be Here Instead, Wilderness Within You sees Parker Millsap exploring the intertwined relationship between humanity and nature. Produced by new collaborator Ryan McFadden (Tony Joe White, Torres), songs like “So Far Apart” find the Nashville, TN-based artist at his most experimental – playing with field recordings, tape loop-driven soundscapes, and musical genre – while tracks such as “Wilderness Within You (Feat. Gillian Welch)” lean into his own signature classic folk songwriting. Taken in its entirety, the album is a natural step in Parker's evolution which interweaves threads of his musical past and influences to gorgeous effect.
“Ryan really took the time to comb through a mountain of material with me,” says Parker Millsap, “and he asked me hard questions about the songs that I hadn’t yet asked myself. He’s infectiously curious. That helped us create a clarity of purpose. So this approach gave us confidence that the melodies and lyrics were solid enough to handle sonic exploration. We had a blast.”

Born and raised in Purcell, OK, a tiny town with a huge sky, Parker Millsap learned early on how to express gratitude through song while playing gospel in the church band. At the same time, he absorbed the honest lyrics of Townes Van Zandt, Mississippi John Hurt’s fingerpicking, and classic albums like Graceland and Rumours. Millsap’s early career recordings – including 2014’s critically lauded Parker Millsap and 2016’s The Very Last Day, the latter an Americana Music Honors & Awards nominee for “Album of the Year” – displayed these influences through character-driven storytelling and minimalist instrumentation. Produced by John Agnello (Waxahachie, Kurt Vile), 2021’s Be Here Instead hinted at further wildness to come while exploring newer, more personal songwriting styles. Wilderness Within You now marks a natural step in Parker Millsap’s musical evolution, interweaving threads of his musical past and influences to gorgeous, remarkable effect.
Known as a captivating live performer, Millsap has spent much of the past decade on the road, including headline tours, festival sets, and support runs with such like-minded artists as Patty Griffin, Old Crow Medicine Show, Shovels & Rope, Lake Street Dive, Jason Isbell, and Sarah Jarosz, to name but a few. Other highlights include appearances on TBS’ Conan and PBS’ venerable Austin City Limits, as well as a now-legendary performance of “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me” with avowed fan Elton John at the famed Roundhouse in London.
