Leadership Training

Are you an executive, director, or manager who is relatively new to your leadership role? Facing major changes or challenges in your organization? Feeling disillusioned about being a manager and losing touch with your passion? Feeling overloaded and stressed? Hoping to significantly upgrade in some major skill areas? Feeling isolated and wanting to expand your peer network?

If you answered yes to any of these questions it may be time for some leadership training! A number of KCP partners have identified the need to seek out and secure some form of professional development support to help retain current and future leaders, make them more effective, and make more meaningful connections with peers in the conservation community throughout the Columbia Basin.

If you or your organization is interested please contact Dave at (250) 688-1508 to learn more about how the KCP may be able to help.

Nature Conservancy of Canada

2013 Federal Budget Supports Conservation

The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) applauds the extension of the Natural Areas Conservation Program contained in the 2013 Federal Budget.

The budget, tabled today by Finance Minister Jim Flaherty, has allotted an additional $20 million to support the Natural Areas Conservation Program through 2013-14. This additional $20 million will help to protect more of Canada's most sensitive landscapes.  The federal commitment will be matched by funds raised by NCC from other sources.

The Natural Areas Conservation Program is a national program to acquire and conserve ecologically sensitive lands.  It was launched by the Harper Government in 2007 and is administered by the Nature Conservancy of Canada with the participation of other land conservation organizations across the country.  Under the program NCC and its partners have already conserved more than 3,500 square kilometres, habitat for 146 species at risk.

The Nature Conservancy of Canada is also pleased to see a further commitment in the budget to a National Conservation Plan.  As Canada's not-for-profit conservation leader we look forward to working with government and contributing fully to the development of this vitally important framework.

East Kootenay Invasive Plant Council (EKIPC)

Executive Director and Field Co-operations Coordinator positions are now available at EKIPC. Deadline for application is April 23, 2013 at 4:30 MDT.

Real Estate Foundation of BC - BC Water Sustainability Endowment Fund Grant

2013 will be the third year the Real Estate Foundation of BC offers the BC Water Sustainability Endowment Fund Grant. The 2011 grantee was Langley Environmental Partners Society for the B-WET project--be sure to watch the B-WET video! The 2012 grantee was Stream of Dreams Murals Society for "Mapping Where We Live." we will produce something similar for this year's grantee.

Proceeds from the inaugural 2010 Land Awards Gala launched the Real Estate Foundation's BC Water Sustainability Endowment Fund, and 2011 was the first year that income from the fund was available. In 2010, over $39,000 was raised; subsequent years' gala proceeds will continue to be added to the fund. We invite ongoing donations to this endowment as the fund will support non-profit activities in water sustainability in the foreseeable future.

  • In 2013, one grant of $3,000 will be available.
  • The grant application deadline is June 28, 2013.
  • The grant will be awarded in late September.

The Real Estate Foundation's mission is to transform land use attitudes and practices through innovation, stewardship, and learning. Such practices must incorporate respect for natural water systems-and implement best practices to support optimal watershed functioning-in order to be truly sustainable.

Because of the Foundation's "land use" mandate, the focus is on fresh water bodies and watercourses, and the foreshore: where land meets ocean. Projects focused solely on marine environments are not eligible for support.

In 2013 the single grant awarded will make a meaningful contribution to support a project or program which focuses on water sustainability from a watershed perspective. This includes public education and/or on-the-ground activities which promote:

  • Community-based watershed stewardship
  • Sustainable use of fresh water

All qualified donees under the Income Tax Act are eligible to apply.

Elk River Poisoned by Coal Mining

A new study clearly indicates that the Elk River is being poisoned by toxic levels of selenium leaching from open-pit coal mining waste rock. The high rates of selenium - far in excess of British Columbia guidelines - have created a crisis for fish and other species in the Elk River.
