A Note on Security
In response to the growing need for enhanced security, we have implemented a comprehensive security plan that includes restricted entry points, the installation of state-of-the-art surveillance cameras, and regular private security details on Shabbat and Yom Tov. For the coming weeks, we have engaged members of the Providence Police Department to provide security details and area patrols on Shabbat, for special events, and when our religious school is in session.
These efforts reflect Temple Emanu-El's unwavering commitment to providing a secure and welcoming environment for all who worship within its walls, ensuring that faith and community can thrive without fear.

Sell Your Hametz
Since ownership of hametz (bread and other leavened products) is not allowed during Pesah, ideally all hametz in one's possession would be given away or destroyed before the holiday begins. Since this often represents a financial hardship, the practice arose for people to store away their hametz before Pesah and arrange to sell it for the duration of the holiday. Click below to appoint Rabbi Fel to arrange a sale of your hametz.
(All forms must be received by the synagogue by 4/19/2024 at 8:00 AM.

Museum Musings: Passover 2024
Why is this Haggadah different from all other Haggadahs?
Pesach is coming! Pesach is coming! How do I know? It's not just because it's Adar and when Adar comes (by the way, “Be Happy,”) we know that Pesach cannot be far behind. It's also because Bubbie’s and assorted area supermarkets are filled to the rafters with all sorts of Passover staples and delights. As we approach the festival of Pesach, feelings of anticipation… and anxiety... abound. How will thirty family members fit around the seder table? Where will thirteen houseguests (children, grandparents, nieces, nephews, sisters, brothers-in-law) sleep? How many creative Pesachdik vegetarian, vegan and protein-filled recipes can I conjure up? And how can our seder be meaningful to the traditionalist and entertainment to our newest seder attendee, the toddler?

The JPS Bible Commentary: Psalms 120-150
by Adele Berlin
Not just for scholars and researchers, the Jewish Publication Society’s highly acclaimed Bible Commentary series provides the Hebrew text of the Bible, the JPS English translation, and a line-by-line commentary. This volume presents commentary on Psalms 120–150, based on the most recent research on the language of the Bible, its literary forms, and the historical context that may have given rise to the psalms. The commentary pays special attention to the message of each psalm and to how the poetry shapes the message. At the same time, it draws on traditional Jewish interpretations of the meaning of the psalms.
Also available are previous volumes in this series: the five books of the Torah, Esther, Ruth, and Ecclesiastes. Enjoyable reading.

As we are all aware, the price of food (and general living) has increased tremendously. To help families around this holiday, we are now taking applications for assistance with Passover food/gift cards to families who are struggling financially. Below you will find a letter and application for Moes Chitim. Please share this with community members who may need assistance paying for kosher food during Passover, as we will be providing Stop & Shop gift cards.
We also have the Kosher Food Pantry here at JCS that you are welcome to refer to if needed. To refer to the pantry, please contact Krissy Jaycox (Pantry Coordinator) at 401-369-5052 to complete the paperwork and schedule a time to come in. Additionally, we have been able to do some confidential shopping hours for orthodox families who have preferred to have privacy when utilizing the pantry as we know that can be a barrier to accessing services.
Kindly,
Samantha

Programming for arts and culture at the Jewish Alliance will resume after Pesach with the screening of a multiple-award-winning film, SHTTL, a beautiful recreation of a European shtetl; and a mindful and sculptural challah bake with our artist-in-residence, Zo Baker. In the meantime, for those who were planning on entering artwork into our upcoming community art exhibit or being a vendor at the upcoming Jewish Culture Fest, the deadlines are this Monday! An extension can be made but it must be requested ASAP.
SHTTL film screening
Thursday, May 9, 6:30pm at Dwares JCC. $8 members, $10 non-members.
In this multiple award-winning film, a filmmaker returns from Kyiv to his rural village to marry the love of his life. He is expected to marry the Rabbi’s daughter, which disrupts the balance of the whole town. In one unflinching shot, this film presents a day in the life of a Jewish village before it disappears. Directed by Ady Walter, Ukraine, 2023. Yiddish with subtitles, 109 Minutes.

Challah Bake! Sculpture and Symbolism Through Baking
Thursday, May 16th, 6-8pm at Dwares JCC. $15 members, $20 non-members.
Join artist-in-residence Zo Baker for a challah bake unlike any other. In this workshop participants are invited to think about challah through the lenses of mindfulness and sustainability. We’ll connect each ingredient to Jewish values and symbolism and come away with new relationships to how we eat and create with intentionality and care. Participants are invited to use the dough like clay to form shapes and structures that tell stories and to consider the architecture of the divine and the everyday. Participants will leave with dough to bring home, build, and bake, and their own hand-made sculptural mini challahs. All ages welcome!
