A Message from our Board of Directors President, Julie Bonney

Chamber Members,

This is my last President's message for the monthly chamber newsletter. I am stepping down as President and Jeff Sanford with Northrim Bank will serve as the new Chamber President for 2022. I won’t be going too far, though, since I will continue to serve on the Executive Committee as Past President along with Patrick Cummings (Island Engineering), Vice President, and we will be voting in our Secretary/Treasurer this month. It will be fun to see what kind of worldly message Jeff will have to share with Chamber members each month 😊.

The Chamber hopes to get life back to more normalcy with some upcoming in-person events. We had The Coast Guard Appreciation Dinner – We Applaud You – on Friday, February 4th. We also have an in-person Business After Hours hosted by Bella Bronze Body Spa on February 24th from 5-7 PM. It’s a great opportunity to get out of the house, meet the Bella Bronze team and learn more about what they offer. There will be door prizes, split the pot, and food and drinks served.

The Chamber would like to give a warm welcome to our two newest members – BrightBox Farms and Double Shovel Cider Company. BrightBox is Kodiak’s first year-round vertical indoor farm. You can order their fresh, locally grown greens online or pick them up at Cost Savers. An Anchorage favorite, we are excited to see what Double Shovel Cider Company has planned for Kodiak. We are looking forward to checking out both great businesses in the near future.

Don’t forget your sweetheart or remind a friend that you love them on Valentine’s Day, February 14th. Buy that special gift locally to support Kodiak’s small business community.

It has been a pleasure to serve as President for the Chamber for the last 2 years. I look forward to Jeff’s leadership guiding the Chamber and an economically bright future for Kodiak.

We Celebrated the Coast Guard at The Annual Appreciation Dinner

More than 150 people turned out for the annual Coast Guard Appreciation Dinner on February 4th. The dinner is a way for the Kodiak Community to show appreciation for local service members.

The evening invited 100 members of the Coast Guard to attended the dinner, including Vice Admiral Michael McAllister and Rear Admiral Nathan Moore. The evening also showed off the best of everything Kodiak has to offer, with a buffet dinner featuring food from Bearfoot Bakery, The Best Western & Chart Room, BrightBox Farms, Cost Savers, The Den Catering, Henry’s Great Alaskan Restaurant, Kodiak Hana, MeLaine’s Crazy Cakes and The Rendevous.

Coast Guard attendees were honored through various proclamations and letters of support from local and state government agencies and through remarks from guest speakers like Vice Admiral Michael McAllister and Rear Admiral Nathan Moore.

The event couldn't have been possible without our event sponsors Matson, KANA, and Chris Kyle Patriots Hospital and our PIKE sponsors.

Three Seats Up for Election Kodiak Electric Association, Inc. Board of Directors

DATE: January 19, 2022

CONTACT: Nancy B. Sweeney

nbsweeney@kodiak.coop

Deadline for filing petitions is March 16, 2022.

Three seats on the Board of Directors are up for election this year in Kodiak Electric Association, Inc.’s membership election.

The Board of Directors consists of nine elected voting Directors and one United States Coast Guard appointed non-voting liaison. This year, the seats currently held by Directors Linda Freed, Jay Johnston, and Matt Moir are up for election. All three seats are for three-year terms. KEA members locally elect KEA’s directors.

Candidate petition packets are available by contacting the KEA office. To be an eligible candidate, you must be a member of KEA.

Completed candidate petition packets must be received by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 16, 2022 at the KEA office at 1614 Mill Bay Road.

The Notice of Annual Membership Meeting, Annual Report, and ballots will be mailed to members of KEA on Thursday, March 31, 2022. Completed ballots must be returned by mail in the envelope that is provided with the notice of the meeting, and must be received by Friday, April 22, 2022. All voting will be done by mail.

Ballot results will be announced at KEA’s Annual Membership Meeting on Monday, April 25, 2022. The meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m.

During 2021, regular meetings of the Board were held on the fourth Thursday of each month, beginning at noon. An average of 30 hours is required for 12 regular meetings during the year. The Board also meets as a whole for the Annual Membership Meeting and on the next day to organize the slate of officers. Meetings may be held virtually.

KEA’s Bylaws state that each member is entitled to one vote. Joint members are jointly entitled to one vote. A ballot is voided if a person not listed on the account signs the return envelope. KEA members uncertain about the name(s) listed on their accounts are encouraged to call KEA to find out how to update their accounts. The deadline for any changes to be in effect for this year’s election process is March 2, 2022. Business Accounts (corporations, partnerships, and sole proprietorships) should annually update their list of officers/owners authorized to vote on behalf of the account.

For further information or to request a candidate petition packet, contact Nancy B. Sweeney, Communication/Human Resource Specialist, at (907) 486-7700.
