Koch advises wariness of scams

Following the report of an elaborate scam perpetrated on a county resident, Allegan County Prosecuting Attorney Myrene Koch advises residents to be wary of unsolicited phone calls or other communications from unknowns, especially during the holiday season. “In this particular fraud action, the scammers claimed to represent a federal agency trying to ‘protect’ the call recipient from being charged with a felony for fraud,” Koch said. “When the call recipient became skeptical, the scammers resorted to threatening an arrest warrant, handcuffing and jail time,” she added. The purpose of the scam was to entice the recipient to remove cash from the call recipient’s bank account and send gift cards, which would be fraudulently used. “The minute a caller mentions gift cards and money, residents can be quite confident it’s a scam,” Koch cautioned. She said, if possible, residents receiving such calls should write down the phone number if it displays on the recipient’s caller id, report the details of the scam to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and, possibly, local law enforcement. The address of the FTC for reporting fraud is ReportFraud.ftc.gov. “It is disappointing that criminals are using the holiday season attempting to defraud Allegan County residents, but it is best to exercise caution to prevent loss,” Koch added.

Combatting spongy a-k-a gypsy moths

As the Board of Commissioners’ newly designated liaison to the Allegan Conservation District, awareness of the district’s work is unfolding in layers. One issue forwarded to the district from the Commissioners is combatting spongy (formerly gypsy) moth infestations that have the potential to damage large swaths of trees. A group of 63 southeast county residents signed a petition asking the county to initiate a program to prevent the recurrence of the moths’ hungry attacks. Apparently, several years ago the moths did significant damage to the Allegan state game area. The petition was forwarded to the conservation district board for consideration which it did last week. The board asked the staff to develop a recommendation for surveying the extent of the moths’ incursion and potentially plan an assault in the spring when it is expected the currently dormant moths become active again. A portion of the district’s mission is combatting pest infestations.

Distracted driving a safety worry

At a recent meeting of the M40/M89 corridor improvement committee, a group of local roads, township, law enforcement and county officials, county and state police officers voiced concern about vehicle crashes involving distracted driving. Unlike intoxication or speed-related crashes, it is difficult to definitively link certain crashes to distracted driving except by eliminating other causes. However, in the past 12 months, Allegan sheriff deputies have identified at least two fatal crashes that investigation afterwards strongly suspect were caused by distracted driving. The officers reminded the group that a state law which took effect in early summer makes it a recordable offense to operate a vehicle while holding a phone in one hand or texting. Early enforcement concentrated on issuing warnings, but as suspected crashes linked to distracted driving encourages the agencies to start issuing traffic tickets due to highway safety concerns.
