CALL UPDATE

Effective June 30, 2024, Kathy Werre and Josh Weaver will be resigning from their full-time teaching positions at Luther High School. Although this was a difficult decision for Kathy and Josh because of their love for teaching they are at peace with this decision. Kathy has the desire to step away from full-time teaching and plans to remain in the area. Josh will be moving back to Colorado so that he can be closer to his family. Luther High School supports Kathy and Josh and their decision. Well, done, good and faithful servants. We pray that the Lord sustains and supports them in their future endeavors.

Recently the Luther High School Board of Control called five teachers to consider serving at Luther High School. Below is a summary of each individual teacher.

  • Austin Lee received a provisional call for the 24-25 school year to serve as a practical arts instructor. Austin is a WELS member at Christ Lutheran in West Salem. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from UW-Stout in Technology Education in 2011. Austin has served as a practical arts instructor at Woodbury High School in Woodbury, Minnesota, and New Richmond High School in New Richmond, Wisconsin. He has worked as a practical arts instructor at Sparta High School since 2015. Austin has been asked to serve as a welding and CNC machining instructor and be part of our robotics program.

  • Martin Santos received a call to serve as a full-time teacher in our Social Studies Department. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Education with a social studies major from Martin Luther College in 2017. Martin has served at Holy Trinity School in Des Moines, Washington, Nebraska Lutheran High School in Waco, Nebraska, and California Lutheran High School in Wildomar, California. He has served as an admissions counselor at Martin Luther College since 2020. Martin and his wife Hailey have a 9-month-old son named Leo.

  • Hailey Santos received a call to serve as a full-time teacher. She is being asked to teach Spanish and English. Hailey earned her Bachelor of Science in Education with a Spanish major in 2019. She was assigned as a Spanish teacher at Minnesota Valley Lutheran High School in 2019.

  • Joe Schmudlach received a call to serve as a full-time Spanish teacher and to serve as our World Language Department chair. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Spanish education from Martin Luther College in 2015. Joe has taught at Collegio B. Group, Minnesota State University, and Cleveland Public School in Cleveland, Minnesota. Since 2018 Joe has served at Evergreen Lutheran High School in Tacoma, Washington as a Spanish and English teacher.

  • Mike Strusz received a call to serve as an English teacher. Mike earned his Bachelor of Science in Education from Martin Luther College in 2007. He also earned his master’s degree in educational leadership from UW-Oshkosh in 2008. Mike taught at Winnebago Lutheran Academy from 2007-2019. He then took a call to serve at Kingdom Prep in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 2019 where he continues to serve. Mike has taught literature, history, math, and computer classes throughout his teaching career. Mike and his wife Naomi live in Milwaukee.

Please continue to keep the call process in your prayers.

ACTIVITIES DIRECTOR ROLES

Luther High School and the Junior Knight Executive Board are pleased to announce that Dan Unke will assume the role of high school activities director starting on July 1, 2024. Dan obtained his undergraduate degree from Martin Luther College in New Ulm, Minnesota and he earned his master’s degree in athletic administration and coaching from Concordia University in Irvine, California. Dan has 18 years of experience serving WELS schools in California, Florida, and Wisconsin.

“Luther High School is excited to onboard Dan to this new role. Dan’s passion for using extra-curricular activities as an extension of the classroom makes him a perfect fit as our high school activities director,” shared Luther High School principal Phil Punzel.

Starting on July 1, Joel Babinec will assume the role of assistant activities director at Luther High School. In this new role, Joel will work with the Junior Knight executive board and the Junior Knights program. The Luther Junior Knight program serves over 300 elementary school and middle school students in extracurricular activities. Students can participate in football, basketball, volleyball, wrestling, band, softball, baseball, and trap.

The Junior Knights Board is thankful that Joel will take a more active role in Luther Junior Knights. His experience will be a blessing for our program.
