Goodbye Mr. Sutherland, You Will Be Missed!
June 20, 2024, marks the passing of Donald Sutherland, an inspiration, a role model, and a fascinating personality. Sutherland started his acting career in 1960 in Scotland (though he was Canadian by birth). After a few B-movie appearances with Christopher Lee, Stephanie Powers, and Tallulah Bankhead, Sutherland became a legend for military hobbyists with The Bedford Incident, The Dirty Dozen, and Kelly’s Heroes. Sutherland really got your attention by playing the nonconformist (he was Canadian). Pinkley, Oddball, Hawkeye Pierce all got the job done, they were even heroes, but they did it their way. Sutherland continued acting until 2022. He played every type of role imaginable. His political leanings were definitely to the left (he was Canadian) and he was not afraid to play a Nazi spy in The Eagle Has Landed and The Eye Of The Needle. He also played heroes in Invasion Of The Body Snatchers and The Puppet Master. He played leading men, supporting roles, and even the infamous psychoanalyst Dr. Wilhelm Reich being arrested by the FBI in the Kate Bush music video “Cloudbusting”. In Austin, we had an old friend named Phil Brandt. His choice of kits and subject matter earned him the theme “The Road Less Traveled”. When you look at Donald Sutherland’s 60-plus-year acting career, I feel that’s a pretty accurate description. So this week at King's Hobby kingshobby.com we celebrate the road less traveled with a wide array of kits from virtually every genre available from our virtual warehouse.
