Straight Outta Compton!
The Compton Gamma Ray Observatory that is. On April 5, 1991, the Space Shuttle Atlantis launched the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory. Known as the CGRO for short, the Compton Observatory was second to the Hubble Telescope in NASA's "Great Observatories" series. The CGRO contained four instruments to measure separate aspects of gamma radiation in the universe. The CGRO discovered 170 previously unknown sources of gamma radiation, it discovered a possible anti-matter cloud near the center of the galaxy, it confirmed that most gamma radiation sources are nowhere near the Milky Way, and it made some significant discoveries about gamma ray repeaters and gamma ray bursts. The CGRO's orbit decayed in 2000, and in June of that year, it burned rentering the atmosphere, with the exception of six 1,800 lb aluminum I-beams and over 5,000 titanium bolts. But as fascinating as this is, you might ask, what does gamma radiation have to do with hobbies? Well, gamma radiation has the shortest wavelength of any form of radiation. And, in the medical world, gamma radiation is used to shrink tumors. And of course, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, gamma rays cause the majority of mutations, so at King's Hobby Shop, 7801 N Lamar Blvd, Suite E-188 we have put our "small scale" 1/144 selection on sale.
