Igor Sikorsky, A World-Class Modeler!
On April 24, 1940, Igor Sikorsky successfully flew his VS-300 for the first time. This was the first time a single-rotor helicopter (single main rotor with a small, vertical anti-torque tail rotor) flew successfully. This configuration would go on to be the standard layout for most helicopters even today. Igor Sikorsky was born in Kiev in 1889. As a child, he was home-schooled by his Mother, where he developed a great love of the works of Leonardo da Vinci and Jules Verne. In 1900 his Father took young Igor to Germany where he studied the natural sciences. By 1901, he had built his first rubber-band powered helicopter. By 1908, he had studied the work of the Wright Brothers and Ferdinand von Zeppelin. At this point, Igor Sikorsky dedicated his life to aviation. During WWI he built aircraft for the Russian military including the world’s first four-engine heavy bomber, the Ilya Muromets. During the Bolshevik Revolution, Sikorsky was accused of being “A Friend of the Czar”, so he immigrated to the United States, landing on Ellis Island on March 24, 1919. Nine years later he became a naturalized citizen and Sikorsky Aviation designed a series of wildly successful fixed-wing aircraft. But he never gave up on his dream of the helicopter, and in 1940 his VS-300 flew for the first time. Two years later his R-4 became the first production helicopter in the world. What started as a balsa wood rubber-band model became the most successful helicopter company in history.
