From the President
As we are still in the midst of the Pandemic, making our fundraising more challenging than normal, I am reminded of an American Fairytale used to teach children the value of optimism and hard work, The Little Engine That Could. You know… “I think I can, I think I can,” etc. and then “I thought I could, I thought I could,” etc. August brought some great news from several groups that pushed through the tough times and found a way to “climb that mountain!” They knew they could do it and they did! Not only did they do it, they did it very successfully. Congratulations to KV 16 on their very profitable World’s Longest Yard Sale and to KV19 for the unbelievable and groundbreaking job they did on their virtual Lunch at the Links. Please read the articles in this edition about both events; you will be amazed at the proceeds their hard work and perseverance provided! I know many other groups are working out ways to meet and fundraise during these difficult times, but if you get discouraged I know a good children’s book you can read!
My hope to all gather at a Member Meeting this fall to present awards that we weren’t able to do at the Annual Meeting last May that was cancelled, is not looking too promising at this point, but we will wait and see what happens, so “Stay Tuned!” We WILL make it happen once it’s safe to gather in larger group settings again.
I’m looking forward to seeing all the presidents at our first Leadership Meeting on September 14th, some in person and some joining us virtually. We will be discussing ideas on ways for your groups to continue on with our mission.
Enjoy the last days of summer, stay safe and healthy and as always, thank you for all you do!

Evergreen Gift Shop Closes
After 29 years Supporting Kindervelt!
Kindervelt Spotlight: Jenny Myers
In 1990 Jenny Myers, Evergreen Retirement Community’s Program Director, offered a challenge to the residents. She suggested taking over and running their own fun boutique/gift shop and send the proceeds to a charity of their choice. A vote was held and Kindervelt of Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center was unanimously chosen; none of the residents had a problem with the idea of helping children in need! Many meetings were held to work out the myriad of details involved in such a large project and the gift shop officially opened its doors on October 1, 1991. The gift shop was financially independent from Evergreen and Senior Lifestyle, making them truly a non-profit organization.
Throughout the years Jenny and her staff spent many hours travelling to the Columbus Gift Mart to buy merchandise, restocking shelves, pricing items, decorating the shop, changing out displays seasonally, preparing for big sale days, training volunteers to run the register, and doing accounting duties all why providing a wonderful place for residents, staff and visitors to shop. A monthly calendar of work shifts was filled with volunteers (residents of Evergreen as well as Kindervelt members) giving countless hours of their time to keep the gift shop open and thriving. In May of 2020, Jenny Myers retired and sadly the Evergreen Gift Shop was closed. Kindervelt would like to thank Jenny for her wonderful vision and she should be proud seeing that it came to fruition. Kindervelt #64 had a great 30 year run, including 29 years running the Gift Shop, providing Kindervelt with annual donations totaling $91,652.97! What an accomplishment! Congratulations, Jenny, on your retirement and thank you for all you have done to help Kindervelt make a difference!

Suicide Awareness and COVID-19
By Regina Vogt-Purdon, LISW-S
September is Suicide Awareness Month. While there is not yet significant data on the impact of COVID-19 on suicide rates, it’s clear that the pandemic has had a substantial impact on the level of stress, depression, and anxiety that people are experiencing. Here are some ways to support someone emotionally struggling:
- Check in on a regular basis.
- Offer to help with basic needs, such as grocery shopping.
- Encourage the person to maintain a regular routine.
- Encourage physical activity.
- Encourage mental activity, such as reading for pleasure, taking up a new hobby, or playing games that stimulate the mind.
- Suggest limiting the time spent watching the news or consuming social media.
Suicide warning signs include:
- Talking about suicide
- Gathering means to take one’s own life, such as hiding razor blades or stockpiling pills
- Withdrawing from others more than usual
-
Intense mood swings
- Preoccupation with death
- Excessive use of alcohol or drugs
- Changes in normal routine, such as eating or sleeping patterns
- Doing risky or self-destructive things
- Giving away belongings or getting affairs in order when there's no other need to do so
- Saying goodbye to people as if they won't be seen again
- Developing personality changes or being severely anxious or agitated
What to do if someone you love exhibits warning signs:
- Ask them specific questions—“Have you been feeling like you wish you were dead?” “Are you thinking about killing yourself?” “Have you been thinking about ways to kill yourself?”
- Help your loved one reach out to their doctor or mental health therapist to share concerns.
-
If you’re concerned that a youth is in immediate risk of suicide, call 911 or Cincinnati Children’s Hospital’s Psychiatric Intake Response Center (PIRC) at 513-636-4124.
- Individuals in crisis can also call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or contact the Crisis Text Line by texting “TALK” to 741741.

KV #19 Virtual Lunch at the Links
It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon and over 175 Kindervelt family and friends joined us for the very 1st virtual Kindervelt 19 “Lunch at the Links” fundraiser. They supported us by donating, bidding and watching us on our Facebook Livestream from the beautiful Heritage Club. Our enthusiastic participants, members and sponsors raised over $61,000 – a new record for this event! Of that total, $25,000 came from our generous sponsors, $22,000 from the raffles and silent auction, and $14,000 from donations. Of the $61,000 generated, $38,000 will be credited to the 2020/2021 fiscal year since $23,000 of the sponsorship money was donated last fiscal year.
We thank the Kindervelt 19 members who worked so hard to bring this event to life. The group gracefully pivoted from an April in-person luncheon to this virtual August event in light of the pandemic. We also thank the many generous corporate sponsors: Renewal by Anderson, Jackie Quigley - Comey & Shepherd Realtors, Keating, Muething & Klekamp, TJMaxx, and Myriad Neuroscience. A special mention to our luxury raffle donor - James Free Jewelers of Montgomery for the beautiful pieces they donated.
During these crazy COVID times we are overwhelmed by the generosity of the people that still stepped up and supported this cause. We cannot thank everyone enough who so generously donated their time, money, and items to make this virtual event successful and so fun for us to put together. Remember, it is all for the kids!

A huge 'shoutout' to Mitze James and her team for chairing our first ever "127 Yard Sale" and raising over $2000 for CCHMC and The Division of Critical Care Medicine and the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit! This was an enormous task collecting, sorting, pricing and selling sooo many items but because of the team, family and friends, we were able to succeed. Congratulations to all who participated!
