Update on Hot Car Technology:
After decades of advocacy, Congress passed the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act which mandates action by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to prevent hot car tragedies. The law requires the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to issue a safety standard that includes requiring hot car technology in all vehicles. However, the implementation of the Federal Hot Car rule has been unacceptably delayed, missing the critical November 2023 deadline set by Congress. KACS continues to advocate for the NHTSA to expedite the enactment of this vital rule. Learn more.
KACS is actively informing parents and caregivers about simple ‘end-of-trip reminder alerts’ available in many vehicles today. These alerts display a message on the dashboard to check the back seat if the back door was opened before the trip. They DO NOT detect a child left in a vehicle and can be easily missed. Tragically, KACS is aware of six children who have died in vehicles with this type of system.
Currently, the market offers several aftermarket products that should be considered only an additional layer of protection. SensorSafe technology, available in select Evenflo and Cybex car seats, features a smart chest clip that alerts parents to check the backseat when a child is buckled in. The chest clip syncs with a cell phone app, which can notify parents if the child is inadvertently left behind.
