Type 1 Diabetes Screening Study Seeking Participants

Help Identify Children at Risk for Type 1 Diabetes

As part of our ongoing efforts to improve pediatric care, we are inviting you to help

identify children who may be at risk for type 1 diabetes through a screening study, led

by Krista Cossen, MD.

Early detection can significantly reduce the chances of serious complications like

diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), and we need your support to reach more patients who

could benefit from this early intervention.

Who Can Participate?

If you have patients aged 2 to 45 years with a first-degree relative or 2 to 17 years with

a second-degree relative who has type 1 diabetes, they may qualify for free

autoantibody screening through this study.

Why Encourage Participation?

  • Early Detection: Identifying at-risk children before symptoms appear allows for

proactive management and can significantly reduce the risk of DKA at the time of

diagnosis.

  • No Cost to Patients: The screening is provided at no cost through the study,

making it accessible to all eligible families.

Next Steps

To learn more about the study view the comprehensive overview document, developed

by Lori Desoutter, MD.

Dr. Kristina Cossen, from Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, is available to discuss the

process with you or your patients. If a patient screens positive, they will receive ongoing

monitoring and, if necessary, early intervention to help manage their condition.

*Study participation is optional and not required.

Question of the Day: APP Scheduling*

Question of the Week, Powered by Mineral: Employee benefits while on FMLA*

Does taking FMLA intermittently affect an employee’s full-time status or eligibility for health benefits?

Answer: No. The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) is clear on this point. You must maintain the employee’s coverage under any group health plan with the same conditions as if the employee had not taken leave and been continuously working full time during the entire leave period.

The specific coverage should also be maintained, both in terms of who is covered under the plan (e.g., employee, employee and spouse, employee and family) and what the coverage includes (e.g., medical, dental, vision).
