Important Updates

FDA Approves First Nasal Spray Treatment for Anaphylaxis*

On August 9, 2024, the FDA approved the first nasal spray treatment of anaphylaxis for adults and some pediatric patients.

According to the FDA, “Today’s approval provides the first epinephrine product for the treatment of anaphylaxis that isnot administered by injection. Anaphylaxis is life-threatening and some people, particularly children, may delay or avoid treatment due to fear of injections,” said Kelly Stone, MD, PhD, Associate Director of the Division of Pulmonology, Allergy and Critical Care in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. “The availability of epinephrine nasal spray may reduce barriers to rapid treatment of anaphylaxis. As a result, neffy provides an important treatment option and addresses an unmet need.” Click here to learn more and to view criteria for use in the pediatric patient.

Type 1 Diabetes Screening Study Seeking Participants*

Help Identify Children at Risk for Type 1 Diabetes

As part of our ongoing efforts to improve pediatric care, we are inviting you to help

identify children who may be at risk for type 1 diabetes through a screening study, led

by Krista Cossen, MD.

Early detection can significantly reduce the chances of serious complications like

diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), and we need your support to reach more patients who

could benefit from this early intervention.

Who Can Participate?

If you have patients aged 2 to 45 years with a first-degree relative or 2 to 17 years with

a second-degree relative who has type 1 diabetes, they may qualify for free

autoantibody screening through this study.

Why Encourage Participation?

  • Early Detection: Identifying at-risk children before symptoms appear allows for

proactive management and can significantly reduce the risk of DKA at the time of

diagnosis.

  • No Cost to Patients: The screening is provided at no cost through the study,

making it accessible to all eligible families.

Next Steps

To learn more about the study view the comprehensive overview document, developed

by Lori Desoutter, MD.

Dr. Kristina Cossen, from Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, is available to discuss the

process with you or your patients. If a patient screens positive, they will receive ongoing

monitoring and, if necessary, early intervention to help manage their condition.

*Study participation is optional and not required.

HR Question of the Week- Voluntary Resignation*

Question: An employee called out a few days ago by leaving a message with some vague information about being ill and hasn’t followed up since. Can we consider this a voluntary resignation and start the termination process?

Answered by the HR Experts at Mineral.

Most likely not. There are many reasons why your employee might not have been in contact since leaving the original message, and since they mentioned illness, there’s a good chance their absence is protected by law. Click here for more.
