Here in the Central Children's Room, autumn signals the start of a new year of book clubs. The groups we host begin each year with book suggestions; the kids who come to the first meeting in the fall vote on the books that we will read for rest of the school year! Come and vote!

We line up titles that have broad appeal and also give readers something to think about. We are always surprised by the election outcome; at least one "worthy" book we thought would be a hard sell, is chosen.

It's time to sharpen your research skills!
Have a report to do? Sometimes a book isn't the best place to start. For example, you might find more about a lesser-known person in Biography in Context. Or look in California Fact Cards for kid-friendly articles about commonly assigned California history topics.

Mock Newbery?
The Newbery Award won't be chosen until January, but in the meantime, Berkeley Unified School District elementary schools are holding Mock Newbery Book Clubs. Here are some books generating Newbery buzz and being read at BUSD schools. Or start your own Mock Newbery club today!
