MOUNTAIN HIGHLIGHT

Welcome not-so-little one!! Our Red Devon cow delivered her calf recently! The heifer calf was born on December 6th. Both the mom (Ruby) and the calf's father are Red Devons, and so the calf is also a full blooded Red Devon. This breed is the oldest cattle breed in America, having been brought here from England 400 years ago, in 1623.

For further information on this heritage breed of cattle, check out The Livestock Conservancy’s website:

https://livestockconservancy.org/heritage-breeds/heritage-breeds-list/beef-devon-cattle/.

We would love for you to come down to the barn to see her at our next Afternoon Explorations on January 4th! Details and Tickets

A few Bovine FAQ’s:

  • How long are cows pregnant: around 9 months/283 days
  • What are female calves called? Heifer calf
  • What are male calves called? Bull calf
  • What do you call a group of cattle? A herd
  • When are cattle called heifers vs cows? Heifers are adult females who have not had any offspring. Once they have a calf they are then referred to as cows.
  • How much does Ruby weigh? Around 1000 lbs
  • How much does her calf weigh? About 70-75 pounds at birth.

DID YOU KNOW...

Did you know that our rainforest in our Harrison Hall of Natural Science is heated during the winter to keep our tropical plants, like our coffee trees, alive? Pictured is one of our small coffee trees in bloom from last April, with small, delicate, white flowers.

After our coffee trees bloom, fruit start appearing, starting green, then turning red in color. These cherry-like fruit usually contain two seeds or beans. Did you know it takes about 2,000 coffee cherries to make one pound of coffee? Caffeine is found in the seeds, fruits and leaves of the coffee plant, serving as a natural pesticide to ward off insects.

When it is cold outside, enjoy a walk in our warm, tropical rainforest, during Afternoon Explorations on Thursdays and Fridays and look for our coffee trees, where that warm cup of coffee comes from. Besides coffee trees, our rainforest also houses these other tropical product plants: a cocoa tree, cinnamon tree, ginger plants and others.

This month we say “thank you” to BMW Manufacturing and Publix Supermarket Charities for their continued support.

For over 5 years, Publix Supermarket Charities has supported STEM education at Roper Mountain. Their support enables us to continue to offer unique, hands-on STEM experiences for students from across South Carolina.

Thank you, BMW Manufacturing and Publix Supermarket Charities for helping us ignite the natural curiosity of all learners to explore and shape their world.
