MICHAEL AND HEATHER BARNES OWNERS OF MANGIA-MANGIA; on the steps with Glenna & MG. I asked them to send me more Info. after seeing this Post; they also sent me the accompanying Article by"THE WEEKLY".... WWW.MANGIA-MANGIA.COM 900 Southard St. 305-294-2469

The Florida Keys Children’s Shelter, serving more than 500 youths and families annually throughout the Keys, presented Mangia Pasta Café owners, Mike and Heather Barnes, with the winning “Best Keys Eats 2020” virtual chefs’ challenge award.

The inaugural cooking competition held last month involved chefs and restaurants that are members of the Keys’ six chambers of commerce. Participants submitted a 3-minute video of themselves preparing their signature Keys dish. Chefs and restaurants were asked to promote the fundraiser on their social media platforms, encouraging fans and followers to donate to the nonprofit organization.
The panel of judges included Heather Carruthers, mayor of Monroe County; Teri Johnston mayor of Key West; Steve Cook, mayor of Marathon; Mike Forster, mayor of Islamorada; Mark Charles, past president of the Key Largo Chamber of Commerce; Margie Smith, president of the Ocean Reef Chamber of Commerce; and Leonel Dieujuste, the shelter’s executive chef.
Serving the Florida Keys for 35 years, FKCS is the only licensed emergency shelter for children ages up to 18 and the only federally-funded drop-in center for runaway youth up to age 21 in the Keys.
“With the cancelation of crucial fundraising events, we were inspired to create a virtual experience that not only benefited our organization, but helped highlight our amazing Florida Keys restaurants,” said Ben Kemmer, chief executive officer of the shelter. “One of the best things about living in the Florida Keys is eating the delicious foods prepared by our talented chefs. We were excited to team up with them for a great cause and will make this an annual event every May.”
FKCS, with facilities in Tavernier and Key West, provides an emergency shelter, group homes, community-based counseling, respite services and meals, and a drop-in center for homeless and runaway youth.

OF COURSE ; Much additional Information in our CRISIS INFORMATION SECTION towards the end of this Issue
The Key West literary community lost one of its most brilliant and beloved members with the death of Robert D. Richardson last week. He was 86.
Richardson was a celebrated historian whose books included biographies of Ralph Waldo Emerson (The Mind on Fire), Henry David Thoreau (The Life of the Mind) and William James (In the Maelstrom of American Modernism). His honors included the Francis Parkman Prize and the Bancroft Prize, perhaps the two most prestigious awards in the field of American history.
Bob was a steady and reliable friend of the Seminar, full of good advice and goodness of heart. He served on our board of directors from 2001-2009, and our honorary board since that time. He had a special interest in supporting young and emerging writers and was a strong advocate for our scholarship program and our 2008 “New Voices” seminar.
In Emerson, Thoreau, and James, Richardson took on subjects viewed by many as the founding fathers of American intellectual life, and ones who have been extensively studied by historians for over 100 years. But Richardson’s approach was utterly new. In addition to their own writings, Richardson endeavored to read every single thing that Emerson, James, and Thoreau read — every book, every pamphlet, every article and essay. Richardson’s aim was what he called the “intellectual biography,” a work that would chart the development of the writer’s mind.
The results are thrilling. Washington Post book critic Michael Dirda called Richardson’s Emerson biography “one of those exciting books that flash bolts of lightning across an entire intellectual era and up and down modern history.” Irish novelist and Booker Prize winner John Banville said Richardson’s works belong “among the glories of contemporary literature.”
While Richardson’s scholarly mastery of his subjects is impressive, it was his ability to provide the reader with a visceral experience of their lives that astonishes his readers. Richardson, who was married to novelist Annie Dillard, with whom he lived in Key West on Margaret Street, had a novelist’s sense of pacing, structure, and humor. “The past can be understood only if we imagine each moment of it as present, with ourselves as the actors in it,” he wrote.
He credited Dillard with helping to activate his writing proess. “I learned from her that you have to go all out, every day, every piece. Hold nothing back. The well will refill.”
In  an interview in 2012 , I asked Bob what it was about Emerson, Thoreau, and James that sustained his attention over decades of research and writing. His answers pointed to his belief in the essential value of the American experiment, and the ever-more-urgent imperative to balance personal interests with the collective good:
“Emerson is for me the best describer of real individualism, the best explainer of why we can and must trust our best selves,” Bob remarked. But instead of the so-called rugged individualism adopted by some as a political philosophy, Bob emphasized something infinitely more humane and well-suited to our times. “In their pluralism, in their respect for mind, those three are voices for democratic individualism. Each voice counts. Every voice counts.”
Bob's voice will continue to comfort, guide, and enlighten us through his books. But we will miss his presence and his friendship a great deal.

Wine and art pairing
Have you ever wondered why wine and art seem to go together so naturally? Or why a certain piece of art seems to pair well with a certain wine? Please join us as we explore these questions on Saturday, June 27 at 4:00 pm during a Facebook Live event. Angela WineGoddess, a wine educator and the inventor of the  Kinky Wine Rubber , will join Sarah to talk about pairing a stunning photo with a delicious wine.
This week we will be pairing the photo  Stepping out into sea spray (Ballerina)  with a sparkling wine,  François Montand Brut Rosé . We will be discussing the story behind the photo, the characteristics of the wine, and why the photo and wine pair so well together. Of course, we will be sampling the wine during the event just to make sure we are getting it right. We’d love to have you join us virtually to taste the wine with us and send us your comments during the live event. If you live in Key West, you can get the wine at Fausto’s for less than $20. If you can’t find this particular wine, just substitute for another Brut Rosé. The event will be recorded to our Facebook page so that you can watch it later if you wish.
See you online!

A Message from Michael Nelson and Allison Rich at the KW Public Library
Online Book Club Fridays!! Our main focus is on New Adult Literature. "New Adult" literature are books that are Young Adult books with slightly more mature themes and content or Adult books that can be enjoyed by teens. It's great for YA readers and non-YA readers alike to explore the genre and discuss them online.

And what's this? A link to all of our selections so far for the New Adult Book Club? Say whaaaaatttt?!?!?!?

Read a book, and then pop into the event discussion on Fridays and give us your thoughts! It's ok if you've just started it or have finished your third! We want to hear from you. Let's talk about books! :)

MOBILE VESSEL SEWAGE PUMP OUT SERVICES MAY BE TEMPORARILY SUSPENDED AS OF JULY 1, COUNTY WILL ISSUE A REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS FOR VENDORS TO SERVE ANCHORAGE AREAS.
MONROE COUNTY, FL – The Board of County Commissioners approved issuance of a request for proposals (RFP) for the Keys-wide Mobile Vessel Sewage Pump Out Service. The agreement with the current provider, Pumpout USA, expires on June 30, 2020 and to date, the County and the vendor have been unable to reach agreement on the terms for continuing the mobile vessel pump out service.
The Board also directed staff to coordinate with Key West and Marathon for potential temporary assistance to pump out anchorage areas. Most anchorage areas have shoreside vessel sewage pump out facilities in close proximity to the anchorage areas, except Key Largo bayside anchorage areas, where there are few land-based pump-out facilities which are limited to the Atlantic Ocean side.
The existing service, free to boaters, is funded in part by County Boater Improvement Funds, which originate from surcharges on boater registrations and State funding, typically via a Clean Vessel Act grant or a state appropriation. In 2011, the BOCC directed staff to develop a Keyswide Mobile Vessel Pump Out Service to outsource and expand an existing County pump out program operating in the Key Largo area. Monroe County partnered with the State of Florida Department of Environmental Protection Clean Vessel Act Program to create a Keyswide Mobile Vessel Pump-Out Service to provide free pump out service to anchored-out vessels in 2013. The purpose of the service is to make it easy for boaters to follow the laws that require no discharge of sewage from boaters in federally designated Marine Sanctuary waters. Boaters who currently use the mobile vessel pump out service will need to use land-based services beginning on July 1, 2020 until a mobile service resumes. There are more than 30 land-based pump-out facilities located throughout the Florida Keys. The County has the available shoreside pump out services listed at  www.monroecounty-fl.gov/pumpout .

SECOND ROUND OF VIRTUAL COMMUNITY MEETINGS TO REVIEW AND DISCUSS NEW STATE REQUIREMENTS FOR COMPREHENSIVE PLAN
MONROE COUNTY, FL – Monroe County will be hosting a second round of virtual community meetings about new state requirements and discussing draft language for the Comprehensive Plan’s Coastal and Conservation Element. The meetings will summarize the County’s efforts related to disaster recovery, storm risk, and sea level rise as they relate to future updates of the Comprehensive Plan. The County would like to hear from the public about these draft Comprehensive Plan changes. The Board of County Commissioners reviewed the proposed language during the May 20, 2020 meeting. The link for the virtual “Go To Meeting” can be found at  www.monroecounty-fl.gov/calendar . The meetings will be held: Thursday June 18, 5:30-6:30 p.m. (General public), Monday June 22, 5:30-6:30 p.m. (General public), Thursday June 25, 1-2 p.m. (General public and Municipal Review)
In 2015, Florida’s Growth Policy Act was amended to require local governments to address what is called the “Peril of Flood.” The new law requires that local governments must have Coastal Elements in its Comprehensive Plans and include a redevelopment component that outlines principles to eliminate inappropriate and unsafe development in the coastal areas when opportunities arise. The law requires policy language in the Comprehensive Plan that addresses high-tide events, storm surge, flash floods, stormwater runoff, and the related impacts of sea-level rise.
“Monroe County has several planning efforts underway that address redevelopment related to disaster recovery, storm risk and sea level rise,” said Michael Roberts, Monroe County Assistant Director of Environmental Resources. “These planning efforts will provide much needed information that will assist the County in its updates to comply with these new State requirements.”
Last year, Monroe County received a grant from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Coastal Resiliency Program to start these required updates to the Comprehensive Plan.

The mango is not only a fruit best savored under a tropical sun, mingled with the sea water beading on your face. It’s not only a color that radiates joy like sunshine. It’s a metaphor for the annual bounty of our island, meant to be shared with friends and neighbors, and as such it’s the perfect symbol for our yearly summer members’ exhibition, where everyone in our amazing artistic family is invited to submit a work of art, and the results never fail to nourish the soul. The Film 'UNITED SKATES" with Reggie Brown

As we enter the 4th month of dealing with Covid-19 since initial lockdowns, more and more forces are acting to pull us all apart. Corny as it may sound, being united is the best strength we have. This week's film has that very word in its title - UNITED SKATES. Dyana Winkler and Tina Brown's 2018 film - Executive Produced by John Legend - is a powerful story of the oppressed communities coming together to celebrate what makes their culture so special. In this case, its the culture of roller skating at rinks across the country on "Adult Skate" night, which was a euphemism for African American night.

Yet these nights became community celebrations, featuring the MOST incredible roller skating you'll ever see, with different cities having different styles of skating, like the Texas Slow-Walk and Ohio Stride. And where recording legends like Salt-N-Pepa and Queen Latifah got their starts. Sadly, these nights have become endangered as rinks across the country are shutting down. Reggie Brown - who joined us at KWFF 2018 and tore up the dance floor on his skates (see an example below from our party!) - personally sets out to save these cultural nights in a pulsating, spinning, acrobatic, thrilling and yes, ultimately uplifting film which will have you asking how cool you REALLY thought you were listening to Joan Jett's "I Love Rock and Roll" at your local rink.

Check out the  trailer here  (and below), and watch it via these platforms (for free!): In case the Trailer Link does not work https://em-ui.constantcontact.com/em-ui/em/page/em-ui/email#edit/activity/7e1e0e60-54ab-4d71-8a37-fe099bcb2a65

CFK expands Construction Apprenticeships to middle, upper Keys
Virtual Information Sessions provide info about the tuition-free “earn while you learn” programs

The College of the Florida Keys (CFK) will expand its Apprenticeships in Construction Technologies to the middle and upper Keys this upcoming fall semester, which begins August 19. Plumbing and Carpentry will be available in the middle Keys, Electrical and HVAC will be available in the upper Keys, and Electrical and Carpentry will be available in Key West. Two virtual information sessions are set to help prospective students learn about the trade professions, career outlooks, and CFK’s tuition-free, “earn while you learn” programs. Registration for the event is required. Visit the  College’s website at FKCC.edu/apprenticeships  to learn more and to register.

CFK’s apprenticeship programs partner the College with Florida’s Department of Education, U.S. Department of Labor, as well as local construction businesses to provide education and training in all aspects of the respective trades—from conceptual to practical skills. In the College’s “learn while you earn” model, students are employed full-time with a sponsoring employer that is partnered with CFK. They attend classes, which are tuition-free, while developing their skills through on-the-job training with their sponsor. As apprentice students advance through the program, their progress is rewarded with periodic wage increases.

Upon successful program completion, an apprentice will be considered a “journey worker” and will receive a four-level certification by the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) as well as a nationally-recognized Completion of Apprenticeship certificate by the State of Florida.

In February, CFK was awarded $2,553,653 to expand its construction apprenticeship programs throughout Monroe County. CFK was one of only seven organizations awarded through the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity’s (DEO) Rebuild Florida Workforce Recovery Training Program to help communities impacted by Hurricane Irma. The program, administered by DEO, is designed to train Floridians in construction trades necessary to support disaster recovery efforts.

For more information about participating in any of CFK’s apprenticeships, as either a student or an employer, please contact Megan Perez, Director of Community Engagement and Testing, at  apprenticeships@fkcc.edu  or 305-809-3185, or  visit the College’s website at FKCC.edu/apprenticeships .

 June 26, 2010
After struggling with the difficult decision regarding the upcoming Fourth of July holiday, the Key West City Commission voted unanimously to cancel this year’s fireworks display and the Rotary event that supports it.
As cases of Covid-19 continue to rise precipitously in Florida, the commission revisited this typically well-attended event three times before making today’s decision.
The commissioners discussed whether or not to keep local beaches open for the busy weekend, but the matter was not part of the resolution and the beaches remain open.
In addition, the commission unanimously approved an ordinance that mirrors the City’s emergency directive requiring masks in establishments and outdoors when social distancing is not possible. The ordinance gives an added level of enforcement to police and code to write civil citation for infractions.
In addition, the ordinance addresses violations by businesses. It states that any business cited twice for the violation of the ordinance will be shut down for a minimum of 24 hours and subject to a full compliance review.
During the same special commission meeting, the commission unanimously voted to transfer to United Way of Monroe and Collier Counties $64,000 to provide rental assistance to hard-hit families in Key West. The money, transferred from the City’s affordable housing trust fund, is earmarked for Key West residents only. Many residents are facing huge difficulties as the state – and the nation – remain under a state of emergency.

JUNE 26, 2020 WRITTEN MESSAGE FROM MONROE COUNTY
Monroe County Emergency Management is aware of the rise in COVID-19 positive cases in the Florida Keys and is communicating daily with the F-DOH and the hospitals to monitor hospitalizations and needs. The County will continue to evaluate the situation and the need for additional protective measures. The County originally closed to visitors to allow time to prepare for a rise in cases and at this time hospitals are adequately prepared with staffing, resources, testing, and facilities. This is a time when personal protective actions will mean the most. Please continue to wash your hands, socially distance, and wear a mask in public settings.
The latest report from the Florida Department of Health shows there there are 14 new cases today in Monroe County including: 4 in Key West, 1 in Key Largo, 2 in Marathon, 1 in Islamorada, 1 in Summerland Key, 1 in Long Key, and 4 as Missing City.

Sugarloaf, Stock Island, Long Key, and Key Colony Beach have one case each. There are 22 cases from missing locations.

Total Viral Tests: 5,103
Positive Antibodies/ Total Tested: 103/2727 (As of June 26)
Current case information can be found at https://floridahealthcovid19.gov. It is updated daily. On the dashboard, look under “See the Report” for detailed information by county, including testing numbers and geographic locations or “See dashboard” for summaries by county. The Health Department will officially confirm any other cases. Cases are a total count of all laboratory-confirmed cases. This number does not represent the current number of COVID-19 positive persons. At this time, the FDOH is unable to determine the number of recoveries from COVID-19. Those who do recover from the virus may have additional unknown health effects. Monroe County posts this Florida Department of Health information as a courtesy to inform residents

Latest Update Sunday June 28 (data thru June 27): FDOH reported 16 new cases in this morning’s report. This is the highest number of cases confirmed in one day for Monroe County and marks the doubling of cases since the County reopened to tourism on June 1st. (From 109 to 219)
Cases: A 22-year-old male confirmed positive for COVID-19 on the 25th of June was removed from the list presumably because although he was tested for COVID-19 while in Monroe County his residency is elsewhere in Florida. The cumulative case count has risen by 15 (from yesterday’s 204) to 219. The new cases consist of one 2-year-old girl – the youngest in Monroe County to date. Of the other 15 new cases, 10 individuals are under the age of 40. There is only 1 person over the age of 60, a 72-year-old woman. There are 4 more cases in Key West (now 71), 3 more in Tavernier (now 37), 2 more in Key Largo (now 31), 1 more in Marathon (now 18), 3 more in Big Pine (now 7), and 3 more with residency not yet identified. 6 NEW SYMPTOMS OF HAVING THE CORONA VIRUS" (ARTICLE DATED 4-27-2020

As the world learns more about the coronavirus,  the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has updated a list of its symptoms  with six new possible symptoms.
Previously, only fever, shortness of breath and coughing were listed as symptoms for the coronavirus.
Now, there are six new symptoms to look out for.
The CDC listed getting chills, or repeated shaking with chills, muscle pain, headache, sore throat or a new loss of taste or smell as new symptoms of the coronavirus.
The CDC advises these symptoms may appear two to 14 days after exposure to the virus. People having trouble breathing, suffering persistent chest pain, or blueish lips or face should contact their doctor.
The coronavirus has infected nearly 3 million people worldwide and killed more than 200,000.

SKIPPER KRIPITZ with Rev. Judi :"Ocean Waves & RAV Drums"
It was a one take video shoot, so not a perfect outing for me, but a lovely concept Judi manifested, & Kim masterfully video-ed. Hope we make this an ongoing series, in many wonderful places, [around pandemic peaceful/local Key West], that i like to draw inspiration & play my RAVs. I call this "Media-tations"! [perhaps, the first of many???]
