We hope you can join us for the Dry Tortugas National Park Artists in Residence Presentation at
6:00 PM on October 4th at the
Florida Keys Eco Discovery Center in Key West !
Thanks to the Florida Keys Eco Discovery Center and NPS at Dry Tortugas National Park, we are able to give these programs. Says Superintendent Pedro Ramos -
"The Artist in Residence Program will help us usher in the National Park Service's Centennial, and will also offer artists and visitors alike views of Dry Tortugas National Park in new and innovative ways."
Filmmakers Carter McCormick and Paula Sprenger, picked after NPAF's competitive selection process, are both experts in digital camera work and their passion is recording the interaction of the natural world and the humans who are closest to it. Says Sprenger: "In my work I look to showcase the grandeur of nature in comparison
to the individual human spirit." Their work
k has
taken them to different places like Costa Rica, Belize, Panama, Ghana and other countries, looking for the unusual in the usual - what goes unseen to the naked eye.

The exhibit will offer opportunities to enjoy the architectural marvel's finery: the grand staircase of carved wood, 20-foot high ceilings textured in intricately molded plaster, arched windows and doorways, eleven fireplaces, and an immense wraparound porch that provided shade to residents and visitors conducting business in the building. Visitors can also explore rare artifacts including sections of the building's original woodwork, a Collector of Customs' letter book, nineteenth century customs forms, views of the original floor plans, and materials used in the edifice's restoration, part of a 9-year, $9-million-dollar project spearheaded by the Society that began in the early 1990s.

Mary Lou Hoover from GNO writes "I am pleased to announce the 2nd Annual Out of the Darkness walk for suicide awareness and prevention. We have scheduled the walk for Sunday, November 6th. Registration will begin at 12:00 Noon and the walk will commence shortly after 1:00 PM. The walk registration and sign-up will begin at the Monroe County Sheriff's Office on College Road and the walk will follow the College Road loop, starting and ending at the Sheriff's Office.
Monroe County continues to have the State's highest suicide rate of all counties in Florida. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention will be working with us to reduce the rate of suicide by 20% by the year 2025. Support of this walk will bring the issue of suicide out of the shadows and into the light. We invite you to join us for this time of healing and in remembrance of those we have lost to suicide."

-------------------------------------------
On Friday, September 23rd, dozens of dedicated United Way volunteers distributed over $30,000 worth of school supplies to 15 Keys schools benefiting the over 8000 students throughout the district.
Through generous donations from businesses and individuals up and down the Keys, UWFK was able to give out 5,500 packages of notebook paper, 2,500 boxes of crayons, 7,500 folders, and much more! Supplies are distributed to schools for children who may lack access to the resources they need to succeed in the new school year.
The 2016 Stuff the Bus drive wouldn't have been such a success without the help of our generous community supporters. The single largest contributor are Publix Supermarkets in the Keys, donating 11 pallets of supplies through their "Tools for Schools" fundraiser. Additional sponsors of the 2016 Stuff the Bus campaign contributing over $250 worth of supplies or donations include: Big Pine and the Lower Keys Rotary, Key Largo Rotary, Cadence Investments, Hard Rock Café, Lower Keys Chamber of Commerce, Hawk's Cay Resort, Florida Keys Electric Cooperative, Metropolitan Community Church, Key West Sunset Rotary, Shell World, Oropeza & Parks, Girls Night Out, The Westin, Marathon and the Lower Keys Association of Realtors, Iberiabank, the Upper Keys Rotary, Last Key Realty, Freewheeler Realty, Mariners Hospital, Shear Paradise Salon, Upper Keys Sailing Club, Upper Keys BPW, Florida Keys Board of Realtors, and the Key Largo Chamber of Commerce.
Steve Estes, President of the Big Pine and Lower Keys rotary states, "Big Pine and Lower Keys Rotary expends much of its time and efforts, as well as considerable financial resources, on programs and projects benefitting the youth of our community. The Stuff the Bus Campaign is a worthy recipient and one we would like to continue to support into the future. Key West Art & Historical Society Celebrates Fantasy Fest with Temporary Exhibit. Oct 5-30
Join the Key West Art & Historical Society in celebrating Fantasy Fest with Fantasy Island, an exhibition that spotlights the world-renowned island festival that draws more than 50, 000 party-goers to the Keys and its colorful 37-year history.
The brainchild of Frank Romano, Joe Liszka, Tony Falcone, and Bill Conkle, Fantasy Fest was created in 1979 as a remedy to boost tourism with a two-day celebration and parade. Over the decades, it has grown into a ten-day extravaganza with a variety of activities such as balls, costume contests, parades and themed parties, and is also a major fundraiser for AIDS Help.
Fantasy Island
is co-curated by Dennis Beaver and will
focus on the themes from each year's celebration, the former Kings and Queens of Fantasy Fest, the fundraising efforts on behalf of AIDS Help and the diverse objects and images that make Key West the place to be each October. There will be a special event in conjunction with the exhibit on Thursday, October 20 to celebrate all Fantasy Fest Candidates.

IN/VISBLE by Abiy T. Frew
Classically trained as a figurative painter, Abiy T. Frew pushes the limits of representation and paint to maximize their expressive potential. Surfaces are built up and scraped down; pigment is applied in gentle washes or with aggressive strokes.
In the context of a global refugee crisis, Frew's latest series, "IN/VISIBLE" starts with the notion of chiaroscuro ("light and shadow") and explores the personal and political dimensions of displacement, absence and belonging.

Reef Relief is thrilled to announce the new staff to join the 2016-2017 team! Reef Relief is expanding our Discover Coral Reefs School Program to new schools in the Monroe Country School District, and we are launching our new Family Education Program. This means all hands on deck for our new staff!
Picture Caption: (From Left to Right) Carly Shabo, Laurel Zaima, Alex Risius, and Jamie Stafford.
Assistant Program Director: Carly Shabo
Carly began working for Reef Relief immediately after receiving her Bachelors of Science degree in Marine Biology from the College of Charleston. After a successful initial summer in the Coral Camp for Kids Education Intern position, Carly completed 2 years as the Education Coordinator and was recently promoted to become Reef Relief's Assistant Program Director. Her love for the ocean, passion for education, and commitment to conservation have inspired her to continue working to improve, protect, and preserve the local ecosystems.
Education Coordinator: Laurel Zaima
Laurel grew up in Michigan, and moved down to Florida to attend the University of Miami. She graduated from the Rosentstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science with a degree in Marine Science and Biology. She continued to migrate south after graduation, and joined the Reef Relief team as a spring intern in 2016 for the Education Program. She quickly fell in love with the island life and made Key West her home. Upon completing her Reef Relief internship, she joined the staff as the Education Coordinator and is responsible for running the Discover Coral Reefs School Program in the Monroe County School District and the Coral Camp for kids.
Fall 2016 Education Intern: Alex Risius
Alex recently graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in Environmental Science and a specialization in Conservation Biology. Although Alex has lived in Michigan her entire life, she quickly found her love for the ocean after studying abroad in the Caribbean. She is very excited to intern for the education program and to be involved in Reef Relief's positive impact for the Florida Keys!
Fall 2016 Stormwater Campaign Intern: Jamie Stafford
Jamie was born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and she will graduate from Oklahoma State University with a Masters in Environmental Science upon the completion of her internship. Jamie has always dreamt of working with a conservation organization. With a background in international business and a strong interest in global sustainability, she has found a great fit with Reef Relief's Stormwater Education Outreach Project. Jamie decided to come all the way down to Key West to join the Reef Relief's efforts to preserve our coral reef.
Reef Relief is a nonprofit membership organization dedicated to improving and protecting our coral reef ecosystems. Find out more at http://www.reefrelief.org or call 305-294-3100.
