The Ocean Grill and Bar (305-296-4300 1075 Duval St.) and The NY Pasta Garden (305-292-1991 1075 Duval St) WWW.NEWYORKPASTAGARDEN.COM
Ocean Grill & Bar   is in many ways a testimony to the bounty of the sea, the adaptability of creating wonderous dishes from the vast variety of life beneath the waves and the endless multitude of flavors created by cultures all across the world using all manner of natures riches to bring out the natural beauty of seafood. Chef Lea Fettis has lived and breathed Key West's very own bounty of delicious seafood for over 20 years. Winning many awards along the way for items like 'Butter Poached Florida lobster' and  our signature dish 'Shrimp & Grits', he decided to give back much of what he has learned and create a largely seafood menu with flavors ranging from Cajun/Creole to the far East of Asia. An eclectic gathering of the finest ways to enjoy what we are blessed to have on our very own doorstep. You can find on our menu or Special's board local items like Florida Lobster, many varieties of local Shrimp, a myriad of wonderful fish, such as Yellowtail Snapper, Black Grouper, Mahi Mahi, Cobia, Ahi Tuna, Pompano, Lionfish and more.

Joining forces with Key West restaurant veterans John Gadonniex and Bill Jordan, we hope to put Ocean grill on the map of places to eat. With a great bar atmosphere as well we are hoping to join the expanding market in the upper end of Duval st for late night cocktails.

Shrimp and Grits - Jumbo local shrimp over fontina cheese grits with a roasted corn and bacon butter sauce

Scalouper - Fresh Diver Scallops fused with black grouper over lobster risotto with stir fried vegetables and a fresh mint puree

Cricket sends regards and tells us : Last Chance to see Painter Eric Anfinson at SALT Gallery: Exhibit Ends March 30-
"An Early Fall," 36 x 24, oil on Italian linen panel, is one of the new works presented by painter Eric Anfinson at SALT Gallery throughout the month of March. His "Beautiful Life" exhibit offers the viewer an intimate look at human forms that deftly explore emotional impact through many surprising layers. Fans and newcomers alike will not want to miss this exhibit at the 830 Fleming Street, which feature more than 20 new original works, ranging from 12x9 to 36x24 on Italian linen panel and canvas that showcase Anfinson's distinct figurative style and his personal depth of feeling about the world around him.   "Just when you think you know the work of Eric Anfinson, he reveals new, startling, and complex layers in the personalities of his subjects," says SALT Gallery owner Jeffrey Cardenas. "We think not only about these graphic representations but also about the artist-and about ourselves." Paintings in "A Beautiful Life" radiate with a sensual narrative that helps the subject come alive, whether it's on a bench in Central Park, in a remote cottage garden, or in a room overlooking the Mediterranean Sea on a warm night. Splash Trash Tour Comes to the Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center
March 16 - 25

Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary welcomes an innovative and inspiring art show at its Eco-Discovery Center March 16-25, the Splash Trash Tour . The show highlights an enormous challenge we all face as we enjoy the beautiful Florida Keys ocean and beaches - trash in our oceans. Splash Trash will engage visitors and provide several opportunities to consider the impacts of trash and the devastating effects on our sea and wildlife, our beaches, our local economies and our human health.

Environmental communicator, Bette Booth, created the Splash Trash Tour to promote dialogue and action about trash in our oceans and what we can do to make a difference.  The Tour combines whimsical art made out of beach trash with an interactive, hands-on exhibit fun for all ages, and community presentations.

"The Splash Trash Tour is a wonderful way to reinforce the Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center's mission of education and outreach about the need to preserve and protect the fragile marine environments around the world," said Craig Wanous, manager of the Eco-Discovery Center.

The Tour will also host the Center's monthly children's program, Discovery Saturday, enabling the Center and the Splash Trash Tour to reach the youth of the Keys community with an interactive program about plastic pollution in the ocean. Kids from kindergarten through fifth grade are invited to participate in Discovery Saturday and work with Splash Trash artist, Bette Booth, to create a new art piece - 'Catch of the Day'.

The Center will also host a presentation by Maria Josefina Olascoaga, an associate professor at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School who studies ocean circulation, harmful algal blooms, and oil spills. Olascoaga will give an informal presentation on her latest research about the connection between ocean currents and ocean garbage patches.

Last Stand is concerned about the impact of unmanaged residential growth and unsustainable tourism on hurricane evacuation, our residential quality of life and our environment.  Last month the BOCC asked staff to create a moratorium on the controversial use of lockouts. The moratorium will be presented at their March 15 th meeting.  We are sharing our understanding of this complicated topic by providing a written description and some diagrams on our web site.  We ask you to go to www.keyslaststand.org and review the information then email Mayor Neugent and the County Commissioners, asking that the 'moratorium on lockouts' include clarification of the following principles:
1)  One ROGO equals one dwelling for one family. 2)  Permanent Residential ROGOs should not be used to build hotels. 3)  Enforce working waterfront protections, or even better, eliminate ROGO transfers to marinas that currently support working waterfront.
Thank you for your time and your concern about our environment and quality of life here in the Keys.

Our show will feature new work by local, national and international artists, Katie Pumphrey, JoAnne Klein and Kiff Slemmons. Each of their work is completely unique yet all seem to similarly employ, as Slemmons says, "the language of materials, their possibility for metaphor and the idea of array." Katie Pumphrey is a recent resident artist at The Studios of Key West. Her paintings feel like being underwater, which is fitting since she is a long distance, open water swimmer and just completed a swim around the island of Key West. This aspect of her life influences her work. Her recent pieces explore movement, competitive roles, and instincts through large-scale paintings and drawings on paper and canvas. Although best known nationally and internationally for her metal work, Kiff Slemmons has also been recognized for working in Oaxaca with Mexican artists, designing and fashioning jewelry out of handmade and dyed paper. It is assumed that paper is fragile, but Slemmon's work demonstrates its strength. We'll be showing her paper jewelry collection from Oaxaca Museum.
JoAnne Klein is a Key West artist who has spent many years studying and expanding her work with aluminum on graphite. We will be showing three phases of this process.

Painting by Martha dePoo
The Key West Art Center, proudly presents two shows in one very special exhibit that opened a few days ago.  . Local watercolor artist, Karen Beauprie,  shows her latest paintings, while in our second floor gallery, Beauprie's students will display their work from this past season of classes.

Beauprie has been teaching watercolor for ten years in Key West. She began teaching small groups on her porch, but when the class size grew, she moved her students to the White St. Deli and Cafe. From that location, Beauprie has moved around the island with her inspiring brand of teaching watercolor techniques, as well as a variety of styles and methods of simply thinking about art and painting. The Key West Art Center course, "Finding Your Voice In Watercolor", is designed for her more advanced students. The exhibit they have designed will use the old "clothesline" technique of displaying paintings that was done by the artists of the art center many years ago.

Both exhibits will run from March 18-29 at the Key West Art Center, 301 Front St., 305-294-1241
There will  be a large Group Painting on the 2nd Floor done by Karen's Students

The Key West Police Department is stepping up rush hour traffic enforcement at the Triangle - the intersection of North and South Roosevelt and US 1 - and at the intersection of Flagler Avenue and South Roosevelt Blvd in response to numerous complaints. Officers are watching for a number of common infractions including illegal left turns from the outside lanes on North Roosevelt Blvd and on Flagler Avenue. These unsafe moves, including abruptly cutting off another vehicle, can be considered a careless driving violation, and a motorist can face fines of over $160.
Traffic is always heaving during rush hour; it's better to wait an extra light cycle than to risk a crash or a ticket. We urge drivers to slow down and be patient.

Key West Art & Historical Society's film series continues with Buster Keaton's 1926 masterpiece silent film, "The General"  Is there a more perfect showcase for a film about a man and his beloved locomotive than the destination city of Henry Flagler's railroad and the Key West museum that houses an exhibit in his name? On Thursday, March 30, Key West Art & Historical Society's film series continues with Buster Keaton's 1926 masterpiece silent film, "The General," set to show at 6:00 p.m. in the Helmerich Research & Learning Center at the Custom House Museum.

The story of Confederate railway engineer Johnny Gray (Keaton), racing to save his two loves - his hijacked locomotive "The General" with his amour Annabelle Lee, (Marion Mack), aboard, from Union spies during the Civil War - many fans and critics consider the film to be Keaton's greatest. With a $400,000 budget, one of the largest of its time, Keaton took his production company and 18 freight cars of set and prop equipment to the town of Cottage Grove, Oregon, where they built a reproduction of a Civil War era town and employed 500 Oregon National Guardsmen to play Union and Confederate Army soldiers.  "You are taken on a exhilarating rail adventure that transcends the tracks into the heartstrings of Annabelle Lee," said KWAHS board member and cineaste Michael Shields, who programs The Society's film series. "Along with Chaplin and Harold Lloyd, Keaton was a colossus of cinema. And fearless; he performed all of his own physical stunts in this ingenious, ambitious, and perfectly crafted film and purchased a train to destroy in a plunge from a burning bridge - a scene that had to be accomplished in just one take!"  Described by "Slate" writer Gary Giddons as an "uncannily beautiful film," in 1989 "The General," was one of the first films to be voted onto the National Film Registry, marking its official recognition as a national treasure.

Made possible in part by the generosity of the Helmerich Trust, tickets for the event can be purchased online at kwahs.org/education/filmseries:  $5 for members, $10 for non-members.  For more information about this and other programs, please contact Adele Williams, Director of Education, at 305-295-6616, ext. 115.  Your Museums.  Your Community.  It takes an Island.

Key West Art & Historical Society Executive Director Michael Gieda (second from left) and a chrome-sculpture humanoid Stanley Papio representative accept a Historic Tours of America 'Big Check' donation of $2500 last week from (clockwise from left) Chris Belland, CEO Historic Tours of America; Ed Swift, President, Historic Tours of America and Clinton Curry, Director, Key West Attractions. The funds are earmarked to sponsor five artists eager to put their engineering genius to play in the creation of kinetic sculpture floats for the upcoming Second Annual Papio Kinetic Sculpture Parade, set for May 6
Papio's Pals Kick in K's for Artist and School Efforts in Upcoming Kinetic Extravaganza  Historic Tours of America has wheeled its train into the "Papio's Pals" station with a $2500 donation to Key West Art & Historical Society. The funds are earmarked to sponsor five artists eager to put their engineering genius to play in the creation of kinetic sculpture floats for the upcoming second annual Papio Kinetic Sculpture Bike Parade, set for May 6.  Inspired by and named for the late Keys artist Stanley Papio, a humorous rebel metal-artist who explored the value of recycled materials long before it was hip to be rusty, the parade is the centerpiece of a full weekend of kinetic revelry running May 5-7.

To date, The Society-stewards to Papio's collection of more than 100 sculptures on display at Fort East Martello Museum- is offering over $7,000 in support to artists and schools participating in this year's parade.  The school scholarships and artists sponsorships will help propel select registrants  forward as they proudly propel their kinetic sculpture floats down Duval Street Saturday, May 6 at noon with other registered kinetic sculpture float and art bike entrants.  Participating artists and schools can  apply for a limited number of sponsorships and scholarships to help move their vision forward by visiting papiokineticparade.com for proposal submission information and guidelines. Selection will be made on concepts of kinetics, creativity, and recycling, with wit, wheels, welding, and wire weighing in. A float that is human powered the only necessary requirement.  Businesses interested in becoming a Papio Pal by sponsoring individual artists, artist teams and/or school groups, can contact Michael Geida at 305-295-6616 x 103 for more information.

The Papio Kinetic Sculpture Parade is sponsored in part by the Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs, the Florida Council of the Arts and Culture, and the State of Florida. Additional support provided by the Monroe County Tourist Development Council, Historic Tours of America, Margaritaville Key West Resort & Marina and Southernmost Beach Café.   Your Museums.  Your Community.  It takes an Island.

    TOGETHER AGAIN

    Cindy Wynn and Susan Sugar

Sanger Gallery  Angular steel and open horizons complement each other in surprising ways in this pairing of well-regarded Key West artists. Wynn utilizes welding, torch-cutting and grinding to create her signature works. For her, the quest to acquire scrap metal and the process of learning new machine techniques are driving forces to create. Sugar captures Key West's tumultuous summer skies, painting on site in watercolor at dawn and dusk. Later she transforms her collection of delicate watercolors into large oils in her studio.  Sponsored by Truman & Company

CONCHTOWN Pam Hobbs and Maggie Ruley

XOJ Gallery.  Experience two views of the wonderful, wacky Key West by two artists who could both be named the quintessential Key West artist. One artist, Pam Hobbs, has her characteristic bold colors, black outlines, and woozy perspective. Taken together with Maggie Ruley, who also embodies this view through soft seascapes that never feel canned and make you feel like a green flash could appear any moment, these good friends capture just about everything we love about this place.  Sponsored by At Home in Key West
