Annual "Mud Pi" Ceramics Event March 5
|
|
Florida Keys Community College's student ceramics club, Mud-Pi, will hold its annual fund-raising event on Sunday, March 5 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on the Key West Campus around the Jay Gogin "Essence of Life" Memorial Fountain. The party will feature an array of food and drinks, live music by the Marty Stonely Band and Lenore Troia, and original ceramic art created by FKCC students. Tickets can be purchased in advance for $30 at
www.keystix.com or for $35 at the door.
As per tradition, attendees will be able to select their own student-crafted ceramic bowl from which to enjoy their meal and then keep as a commemorative souvenir. The funds raised will be used to purchase materials and equipment that enable Mud-Pi to continue to beautify and enrich the community.
For more than 20 years, the talented students of Mud-Pi have generously created dozens of ornate ceramic wall murals and fountains that grace many locations in the Keys and provide the College's Key West Campus its signature aesthetic. The department also hosts young students-elementary through high school grades-as well as special needs groups to introduce them to the fine art of pottery. .

Our audience grows each year and in 2016 ticket holders traveled from as far north as Canada, as far we
st as Los Angeles and Seattle, and as far east as London to attend our beloved film festival in Key West. South Florida locals had the shortest distance to travel it's likely why our numbers in the theaters and at events were some of the strongest to date from the local community. Your support is inspiring and we can't wait to see you again this November for the 2017 KWFF.
Last year our
Spotlight Screeningsincluded
La La Land, 20th Century Women, and
Manchester By The Sea. These KWFF selections share over a dozen
Golden Globe Award nominations and recently gained international recognition at this Month's
La La Land took home 5 BAFTA awards while Casey Affleck took home the award for Leading Actor for his performance in
Manchester By The Sea. The film also won the BAFTA award for best Original Screenplay. We're proud to see such KWFF selections prove to be popular with global audiences and critics alike. Along with our curation of Spotlight in 2015, KWFF is gaining a reputation for picking and screening award winners.
If last year is any indication of the quality of our programming, November 15-19, 2017 in Key West should not be missed! See the best films of the year at KWFF before the they hit theaters.

Ocean Grill & Bar
is in many ways a testimony to the bounty of the sea, the adaptability of creating wonderous dishes from the vast variety of life beneath the waves and the endless multitude of flavors created by cultures all across the world using all manner of natures riches to bring out the natural beauty of seafood. Chef Lea Fettis has lived and breathed Key West's very own bounty of delicious seafood for over 20 years. Winning many awards along the way for items like 'Butter Poached Florida lobster' and our signature dish 'Shrimp & Grits', he decided to give back much of what he has learned and create a largely seafood menu with flavors ranging from Cajun/Creole to the far East of Asia. An eclectic gathering of the finest ways to enjoy what we are blessed to have on our very own doorstep. You can find on our menu or Special's board local items like Florida Lobster, many varieties of local Shrimp, a myriad of wonderful fish, such as Yellowtail Snapper, Black Grouper, Mahi Mahi, Cobia, Ahi Tuna, Pompano, Lionfish and more.
Joining forces with Key West restaurant veterans John Gadonniex and Bill Jordan, we hope to put Ocean grill on the map of places to eat. With a great bar atmosphere as well we are hoping to join the expanding market in the upper end of Duval st for late night cocktails.

Writer/musician/ playwright Ben Harrison will be featured this weekend on the nationally syndicated radio program, This American Life, telling the true macabre story of Key West's own "Count" Carl von Cosel and his passion that defied death, for an episode titled "Grand Gestures". The musical version of Harrison's book, Undying Love, which tells the tale of von Cosel, is coming The Studios February 2018.
The musi
cal version of Harrison's book, Undying Love, which tells the tale of von Cosel, is coming The Studios February 2018.
Von Cosel achieved international fame in 1940 when the corpse of his true love (and former tuberculosis patient) Elena Milagro Hoyos was discovered in his secluded house on Flagler Ave., where he'd kept her preserved for seven long and amorous years. In 1997 Harrison penned the definitive account of this bizarre story in his nonfiction book, Undying Love. Also released this month will be the unabridged audio production of the book, and on Valentine's Day 2018, he will bring the revised stage version back to life at The Studios of Key West.

New One-Act Plays by Florida Writers Premiers at the Key West Theater
Did you know that Key West is about 129 miles away from the nearest Walmart? That is just one of the many reasons life in the Keys is not like anywhere else in the country. "129 Miles From Walmart," opening at the Key West Theater February 17th, is an inspired evening which includes world premieres of original short plays by some of Florida's best, and celebrates those who are living their lives a bit differently than most. "We want to continue to give a voice to new playwrights," says Key West Theater Artistic Director Juliet Gray, "especially those living and writing in Key West." Most of the new works in "129 Miles From Walmart" have been written by Key West writers including Gray, Bob Bowersox, Michael Marrero, Jon Rhoads, and Joanie Sullivan among others. The evening stars Colin Bevis, Brian Furlong, Erin McKenna, Joanie Sullivan, Philip Cole White, and Alexandra Zeto.
Highlights from "129 Miles From Walmart" include the short play "Bob Goes to the Park" by Key West playwright Michael Marrero, which addresses this current age of constant connection to all things via the Internet. The lead character Bob is forced to shut down at the park and is amazed at what happens when he does. "Going Again," by Key West playwright Bob Bowersox is set in the ethereal in-between, where Facilitators help the Travelers on their next mystical journey. In "How to Explode the World," by Key West playwright Jon Rhoads, a veteran surgeon mentors a young doctor through a crisis of conscience. The play "It's in the Stars" by Gainesville playwright Stefanie Anarumo is the story of two people who are brought together by the manipulation of fate. Integrating American Sign Language into the story, this original piece explores the true meaning of communication, love, and understanding. Mayor Craig Cates has proclaimed February as Know Your Fisherman Month, acknowledging the vital role that our local fishermen play in our economy and our lives.
"The Florida Keys commercial fishermen provide our community and our tourist economy with local, fresh, sustainably-caught seafood," reads the proclamation, and "Key West's reputation has been built as the seafood capital of the world."
On February 22
nd, Keys commercial fishermen, restaurant chefs and community members will come together at the Three Hands Fish Market at Ibis Bay to launch the "Who Caught It?" program in appreciation of commercial fisherman.
A group of local commercial fishermen stepped up to receive the proclamation.
"Standing here are our version of our farmers," said fisherman Paul Menta. "Our fishermen are our farmers.
"We appreciate you buying local fish that comes from here in the Keys," he said.
He urged diners to, when ordering seafood, ask "Who Caught It?" When you do, said Menta, you'll receive a baseball card with the face of the local fisherman who caught your meal and you'll know that you're supporting local commercial fishermen.
Commercial fishermen Alex Osborn, Zane Osborn, their father Tony Osborn, Jose Suarez, Three Hands Fish Market manager Joseph Tresner, commercial fisherman Paul Menta and Mayor Craig Cates.

Marathon woman loses money to scammers
This time of year we always start getting calls about crooks using the name of the IRS to scam money from people.
A Marathon woman called the Sheriff's Office Tuesday to report being scammed out of $4,200. She said she got a call from someone claiming to be from the IRS saying she owned taxes for the years 2010 to 2015. She was told to purchase a large number of iTunes gift cards and call in the card numbers to the scammer. She was also instructed to do perform three Wells Fargo Money Transfers, which she did.
According to the IRS, they will never call you to demand immediate payment. They won't call you at all without first sending you a bill in the mail.
They will never require you to pay in a certain way, like requiring payment in prepaid gift cards or Wells Fargo Money Transfers.
They will never ask you for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.
They will never threaten to bring police or other law enforcement agencies to arrest you for not paying.

(C) Key West Art & Historical Society Hosts Weekly Drawing Sessions at Fort East Martello Museum
Select your medium of choice and join Annamarie Giordano in Life Drawing sessions at Fort East Martello on Tuesdays and Fridays through March 31 from 11am-2pm. Her three-hour workshops, featuring nude models in short and long poses, are open to all levels of artists.
"Life Drawing is the art of drawing the human figure and bringing it to life," says Giordano. "Every pose is a new challenge and adventure in learning perspective, angle, and light. Regular practice sharpens your drawing skills of observation and your abilities in art overall.
Giordano is fond of the historic fort as a venue for its natural lighting and history, "and its magic sets a perfect tone for life drawing," she says.
It also has free parking. She emphasizes that no experience is necessary and "you get to benefit by seeing other artist's different techniques and mediums, such as watercolors, pencils, charcoal, pastels, and oils."
A graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Giordano has taught extensively, including the Cape May County Art League, Studios of Key West, Florida Keys Community College, and The San Carlos Institute.
"I take pride in my class by providing wonderful models, creative poses, and 3 hours of continuous drawing, not wasted time or talk about my skills or education," says Giordano. "Artists leave these sessions with 8 to 10 different drawings."
Sessions are $25. Registration information can be found at TK or by calling Adele Williams, Director of Education at 305.295.6616 extension 115. Though drop-ins are welcome, advanced registration is encouraged as is early arrival for set-up. Some materials will be available on site for purchase if needed. Your museums. Your community. It takes an island.
Newly released film "America Rising: The Arts of the Gilded Age" with Remote Filmmaker Q&A Session at Custom House Museum March 2
(L) Thursday, March 2, at 6 pm, the newly released documentary "America Rising: The Arts of the Gilded Age" will screen in the Helmerich Research & Learning Center on the third floor of the Custom House Museum. Following the film, which highlights 87 classic American artworks from the post-Civil War period described by Mark Twain as "The Gilded Age," Connecticut-based independent film-making team Michael Maglaras and Terri Templeton of 217 Films will participate in a Q&A session with viewers from a remote location.
"America Rising: The Arts of the Gilded Age," which premiered on January 20 in Richmond, Virginia, focuses on how the rise of the middle class and the even greater rising of industrialists such as Henry Clay Frick contributed to an America poised, through its art, to commemorate its past and invent its future. Due to Space Constraints go to their website for Additional Information on this event.

FAVORite Creatures of the Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuges
- Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge Manager Jeremy Dixon captures a handful of American crocodile hatchlings in order to measure and tag them, research that helps determine the survival of the young and to measure population trends. Dixon, who has lived in Key Largo for 4 years, is inspired by the many refuge volunteers and their dedication to the habitats and creatures that live in them. While he stresses the importance of never handling the wildlife, especially crocodiles, he encourages the public to get out into the refuges to experience them in a wildlife-friendly way. "Outdoorfest at Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge gives visitors a chance to see and experience areas that are normally closed to the public," he says. "By doing this, we hope to impart a knowledge of the wild animals and places and why protecting them is so important." Dixon is part of the upcoming Outdoor Fest, created by the Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuges Complex and their Friend's group FAVOR to help people recognize the refuges as safe havens for the creatures who live in them while also educating them on how to enjoy the areas in wildlife-friendly ways. The Fest is set for Saturday, March 11th through Saturday, March 18th and is filled with family-friendly, mostly free outdoor adventures and hands-on activities. The events take part in ALL of the Keys to Upper to Key West. Visit www.favorfloridakeys.org/outdoor-fest for more information and to register for the many events offered-some, like special kayaking trips in Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge-have limited availability and a registration fee. Brought to you in part by the Monroe County Tourist Development Council.

The Loons are a couple of, well, loons, who believe in the magic of music, who believe that music is meant to be enjoyed for the way it can move the hearts, spirits, and thoughts of those who hear it - not just sell drinks and food. The fun they have performing transfers to the audience, and a good time is had by all. Unusual instrumentation including mandolin, ukulele, and dulcimer, even conch, kazoo, and xylophone, provides settings for their soprano and baritone voices. This presents a refreshing change from convention right from the start.
Mellow Cafe is a perfect match for their music, a venue with the right vibe for their offbeat charm. Outdoor seating on a patio by the harbor, a great selection of delicious food and brews and food, a delightful range of musical styles spanning decades and genres - what's not to like? Do you believe in magic? The Loons do!
Come see what it's all about Saturdays from 6-8 PM at Mellow Cafe, 1605 N. Roosevelt Blvd., bayside, just past Eisenhower.

129 MILES FROM WALMART Opening at The Key West Theater 2/17-3/18
New One-Act Plays by Florida Writers Premiere at the Key West Theater. Did you know that Key West is about 129 miles away from the nearest Walmart? That is just one of the many reasons life in the Keys is not like anywhere else in the country. "129 Miles From Walmart," opened at the Key West Theater February 17th, is an inspired evening which includes world premieres of original short plays by some of Florida's best, and celebrates those who are living their lives a bit differently than most. Go on their website for detailed info.; as well as further up as one of our Lead Features.

In this tuneful and heartwarming musical, we follow Agnes and Michael through 50 years of marital bliss, infidelity, children, incompatibility, old age, and simple joys. From the creators of "The Fantastics", this endearing musical spans the years of 1895 to 1945, rolling out one catchy song after another in this bedroom comedy.
