Don't Forget! Join Us Next Tuesday for a Dinner & Discussion with Hagyard Equine Medical Institute Veterinarians!

If you’ve ever wondered how veterinarians hone their sleuthing skills, if your horse qualifies for a “sports medicine” vet or what all those high-tech diagnostic thingamajigs DO, you are not alone! We hope you’ll join the Kentucky Horse Council and a team of veterinarians from Hagyard Equine Medical Institute for our Summer Dinner & Discussion on Tuesday, July 16, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute's Sport Horse Complex.

Drs. Nimete Browne and Russell Freeland will go over some of their more unusual cases, offering how they came to a diagnosis and what modalities they used to do so. They will also offer insight into the diagnostics available at Hagyard and on what types of cases these modalities perform best. These include nuclear scintigraphy, ultrasound MRI, Hallmarq standing MRI and MILE-PET scan.

Tickets are $35. All equine enthusiasts are welcomed, and audience questions are encouraged.

8 Summer Health Concerns for Horses

Summer is easily a horse keeper’s favorite season—what’s not to love? The rainy, muddy spell of spring has passed, the longer days allow plenty of time to ride, and your horse’s coat is sleek and easy to clean. Sure, it can get hot, but you can always stay indoors to keep cool while postponing the barn chores for the more temperate evenings.

If our horses could tell us what they think, however, chances are they’d give summer a much less favorable review. For every reason we love summer, there are at least two why the season is especially hard on them. From hooves that crack from stamping in response to flies to a body type that holds heat more efficiently than it disperses it, horses simply aren’t designed for summer weather.

'A Fantastic Start to the Yearling Sales Season'" Fasig-Tipton July Sale Ties Record Median

Fasig-Tipton's July Sale of selected yearlings was held Tuesday at the company's Newtown Paddocks in Lexington, Ky. The catalog featured precocious, athletic yearlings, including a vanguard by first-crop sires in the Freshman Sire Showcase.

"This was a fantastic start to the yearling sales season," said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning. "The first horse in the ring brought over $200,000 and that helped set the tone for the rest of the day."

Meet XXXcessive Feature!

2005 15.1h APHA Mare

XXXcessive Feature, affectionately known as “Iris”, is a pretty girl with light riding capabilities. She was pretty anxious upon arrival and needed some extra time to settle in. Now that she is settled into her new life and routine here, Iris has proven to be a solid citizen. She knows her groundwork and has been ridden in and out of the area. She has been trail ridden bareback, in a halter and lead rope. Iris does prefer to be ridden bitless but can go in a simple snaffle with a very light-handed rider, and can be ridden with or without a saddle. She is sound for walk/trot riding.
