Keisho Okayama "Fragmented Field" 2011, acrylic on canvas, 69 x 65".

The abstract paintings of Keisho Okayama are meditative and soulful. His work is deeply introspective, yet conveys universal experiences. And, while his work is entirely modern, it speaks of the ancient. The artist paints on unstretched canvas using stains of color that interact with sweeping brushstrokes, smudges, and dabs of pigment. His imagery has a misty dreaminess and an inner glow. This is thoughtful and serious work, courageous, joyful, and very human.

The artist states: “I am interested in how the interaction of color can create a palpable sense of plastic space. I am also interested in how tonal variations can emphasize a feeling of physical reality by creating a sense of natural or internal light. I like to paint on canvas that is not framed or stretched because the material itself becomes an important aspect of the overall feeling, particularly as the painting is hung so that it drapes on the wall.”

Keisho Okayama received his B.A. from U.C.L.A. in 1962. He has a long exhibition history and he has taught at the College of Creative Studies, University of California, Santa Barbara, California, East Los Angeles College, and U.C.L.A.
