Feminine Hygiene Product Drive
One of the many challenges for low-income women is how they manage their periods. How do you pay for feminine hygiene products when you can't afford enough food for your family? This is the very real question many women in poverty ask themselves every month.
In Howard County, 16,000 residents live at or below the poverty level and approximately 60% are women and girls. That $7 box of tampons is a huge expense for families struggling to make ends meet. Food stamps cannot be used for tampons or pads, leaving women with limited options which can lead to serious health problems.
The Howard County Commission for Women in partnership with the Howard County Food Bank is holding its 8th annual Feminine Hygiene Products Drive now through May 25. Help a woman or girl in need by donating sanitary napkins, tampons or cash contribution. Collected donations will be distributed through the Howard County Food Bank, which provides no cost, nutritious groceries as well as personal items to low income county residents.
Contact the Commission for Women to arrange for pick-up at 410-313-6400 or women@howardcountymd.gov or drop off your donations at the Howard County Department of Community Resources and Services, 6751 Gateway Dr., Suite 300 in Columbia. Thank you for your contribution.

We have an opening on our five member Village Architectural Committee. The commitment is small, but the impact is BIG. Members make property site visits, review and vote on applications for exterior alterations, and consult on covenant issues in the Village.
Meetings are held twice a month; on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays at 7:30pm at Kahler Hall and are usually over by 9pm. Volunteers must lease or own property located in the Village and must be able to obtain a Certificate of Compliance for their property. Contact the Covenant Advisor, Debbie Nix, for more information at 410-730-0770 or covenants@harperschoice.org
TRASH AND RECYCLING REMINDERS
Some households have three or more trash and recycling containers that must be stored between collection days. As a rule, recycling bins, trash cans and other bulk items must be stored out of view from the street and neighboring properties, with the best location being in a garage or carport. If that is not an option, bins may be stored neatly at the side or rear of the home, should have tight-fitting lids, and not be overflowing. Landscape screening may also be used to shield cans from view. Put your cans out curbside for pick-up no earlier than 6 p.m. the evening prior to your collection day, and they should be promptly removed from view that same evening.
In townhouse communities with common area collection, it is even more important to remove your items the evening after the cans have been emptied. Placing items out in plastic bags is strongly discouraged as they can lead to rodent or pest infestations.
BULK ITEM & SCRAP METAL COLLECTION
If you have large items taking up space in your home that really need to go to the landfill, don't pay to have them hauled away. Call the County or
go online to schedule a bulk item pick-up, curbside, in front of your home. Up to four items per household per collection; any items too large to be collected by two workers will be tagged and left for the homeowner to remove. For a list of items that will not be collected or to schedule a pick-up, call 410-313-6444 or visit
HowardCountyBulkPickup.org.
