Feminine Hygiene Product Drive
One of the many challenges for low-income women is how they manage their periods. How do you pay for feminine hygiene products when you can't afford enough food for your family? This is the very real question many women in poverty ask themselves every month.
In Howard County, 16,000 residents live at or below the poverty level and approximately 60% are women and girls. That $7 box of tampons is a huge expense for families struggling to make ends meet. Food stamps cannot be used for tampons or pads, leaving women with limited options which can lead to serious health problems.
The Howard County Commission for Women in partnership with the Howard County Food Bank is holding its 8th annual Feminine Hygiene Products Drive now through May 25. Help a woman or girl in need by donating sanitary napkins, tampons or cash contribution. Collected donations will be distributed through the Howard County Food Bank, which provides no cost, nutritious groceries as well as personal items to low income county residents.
Contact the Commission for Women to arrange for pick-up at 410-313-6400 or women@howardcountymd.gov or drop off your donations at the Howard County Department of Community Resources and Services, 6751 Gateway Dr., Suite 300 in Columbia. Thank you for your contribution.

We have an opening on our five member Village Architectural Committee. The commitment is small, but the impact is BIG. Members make property site visits, review and vote on applications for exterior alterations, and consult on covenant issues in the Village.
Meetings are held twice a month; on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays at 7:30pm at Kahler Hall and are usually over by 9pm. Volunteers must lease or own property located in the Village and must be able to obtain a Certificate of Compliance for their property. Contact the Covenant Advisor, Debbie Nix, for more information at 410-730-0770 or covenants@harperschoice.org
Stream Restoration
A large stream restoration project is planned over the next few years in the villages of Harper's Choice, Town Center and Wilde Lake. The project is being conducted by Columbia Association (CA), the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA), and SHA's contractor - Ecotone, Inc. CA's goal is to reduce the amount of sediment flowing into Wilde Lake and Lake Kittamaqundi. All work is restricted to open space owned by CA.
In total, approximately 6,691 feet of stream channel will be restored by this project. The project area will include the section of stream that flows under Little Patuxent Parkway to Lake Kittamaqundi. The project will skip over Wilde Lake and the section of stream behind Green Mountain Circle and Faulkner Ridge Circle - that section is partially on Beaverbrook property - and then will start again at Hesperus Drive, continuing along the main section of stream past Eliot's Oak Road to the Howard County Parks and Recreation property at Cedar Lane Park. Restoration work will also occur on the tributary between Fallriver Row Court and Mystic Court.
The timeline for this project is between two and three years. Planning has already begun, and a design for the project should be available by summer. Permitting will include county, state and federal resource agencies and will take six months to a year to accomplish. A construction schedule will not be available until the design has been permitted.
SHA is funding all aspects of this $2.2 million project at no cost to CA in exchange for stream restoration credits that will apply towards the Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System permit that SHA is obligated to meet. Maintenance of the restored stream sections will be SHA's responsibility.
