Professional accountability: You are responsible for the decisions you do not make.
 
One of the key drivers of the rural and isolated practice nursing model in Victoria was the need for nurses to make more autonomous clinical decisions about patient treatment when there was no doctor available.  There are a whole range of medico-legal issues relating to this model which Dr Heather Wellington set out in her report "Medico-Legal Issues - Rural Collaborative Practice Project".  One issue that I think might surprise many doctors and nurses, is that deferring the clinical decision to another clinician does not necessarily dilute ones accountability.

does not mean this accountability is diluted; to the contrary, a nurse's accountability encompasses any decision to call on a doctor, or any other member of the clinical team, for advice and/or assistance."
