“The world will persist in exhibiting before you what you persist in affirming the world is.” Emma Curtis Hopkins

Have you ever noticed how some people can walk into a room (or in the case of this story today - into the pool) and just change the energy or uplift everyone just by their presence? And have you ever noticed when you are around someone who is really negative it almost feels like you have been “slimed” and you want to rush to take a shower to wash all their negativity off of you?

I had a great example of these two states of being last week when I was at my usual swim workout with my team. In my lane was one of my favorite people to swim with – Eliza, a bubbly, smiley, enthusiastic mother of three who is a great athlete and who always comes to every workout with the most positive attitude no matter what. On the other hand, there was a woman in our lane that day who complained about everything; the pool was too hot, the sets were too hard, looking at the clock and asking when will this be over - and kept repeating the phrase “This workout is killing me!” And yet Eliza kept her positive attitude and got us all through that workout with a smile on her face.

In all my talks and in the lyrics of my songs I often write about the concept of “what you think about is what you bring about.” The idea is that whatever you are affirming (positive or negative) are like seeds that you are planting in the ground, and with enough “watering” (repeating that phrase over and over) will eventually come to be. That’s one of the main reasons why I love writing the positive affirmations that I set to music - these are all the “issues” that I am working on, and I find that singing those positive words has a direct effect on my physical and mental well-being. Just affirming the positive things I want in my life has very often led me to having those things manifest into reality.

In all my women’s retreats I always ask the question, “What is the biggest energy zapper that is in your life?” The group always unanimously agrees that it’s being around negative people. So, what can we do when we are trapped in that situation? My favorite phrase is “I just bless them on their way” and try to create a healthy boundary and not engage. But I also think it starts with our own energy - if we are putting out good positive vibes, and minding our own thoughts and keeping them positive, I believe we attract more people who resonate on that same plane.

And as far as the negative people? As Albert Einstein said: “Stay away from negative people. They have a problem for every solution.” I say just keep your thoughts as positive as you can and maybe they will be so blinded by your brilliant light they will just turn the other way!
