From the Desk of LWHS Principal Christine Bell

Greetings, Kang Families.

As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday (November 23rd) and Native American Heritage Day (November 24th) I am reminded to take time for gratitude. I am thankful each day for the land we live on, for my family, and for the community at Lake Washington High School. Our staff and families keep our students on track through teamwork and communication. Thank you to each of you for "tuning in" and keeping your student's wellbeing and education at the forefront.

On November 8th we started the second quarter of the school year. Soon you will see quarter grades reflected in Skyward. Quarter grades do not go on a student's transcript, but they do add into the semester grade, which is transcribed. Now is a great time to check on your student and see how they are doing in their classes. If you are concerned about missing assignments, I encourage you to ask them for one thing they can do today to work on catching up. Then, ask them what they can do this week. Students get overwhelmed and they rely on your support. For students, catching up starts by talking with their teacher and getting organized. They should be making use of Roo time to make up tests and to work with teachers on missed learning opportunities. The second half of the first quarter is full of holidays and time off from school. It's time to clean out backpacks, organize binders and set goals.

Winter sports are underway. Basketball, boys swim, gymnastics and wrestling are all sports offered in the winter at LW. Go to the LWHS athletics webpage to find details and schedules. Students who need help paying for sports or related supplies and fees can reach out to their counselor for assistance.

If your child does not have up-to-date immunizations, you will receive communication from our school nurse. Students are required to have immunizations on file to attend school. Please contact your doctor or our health room if you need assistance. Unfortunately, when a student is not immunized and they don't have immunizations scheduled, they will not be able to attend school. Please follow through on any communication you receive from our nurse.

On another note, our Theatre Program is preparing for The Outsiders. This play is based on the novel by S.E. Hinton. Please consider attending this show. You will not regret it. Shows are scheduled for December 1st through the 9th. Tickets can be purchased here. I will see you there!

Our next round of Parent & Community Learning Walks is scheduled for Thursday, January 18th at 10am. Parents and community members who attended in October had the opportunity to visit 14 classrooms. They left with an understanding of our programming as well as an appreciation for our teachers and staff. Visiting classes is a privilege - one I get to enjoy each day - and I encourage you to sign up to participate on January 18th. Please sign up here

Thank you for partnering with us for student success. Go Kangs!

PTSA

Gratitude from PTSA President, Colleen Rutherford

As I look at the calendar I see that we are already firmly in the middle of November. First quarter has ended, the stunning red and golden leaves are nearly gone, the rain has returned. As ever I am keenly aware of the blessings in my life and thankful for the people who make up our community - YOU!

As your PTSA President I have witnessed and taken part in many opportunities to serve the LWHS community. PTSA sponsors Coffee with Christine, Teacher/Staff Grants, Teacher Appreciation, College Application Workshops, Senior Party and a host of other activities and community building events. None of this would be possible without YOU! You are the reason we are successful in giving back.

It is through this lens that I am also able to say, thank you! Thank you for giving your time, talent, and financial contributions to keep our PTSA going. I am especially thankful to the following donors: The LWHS Class of 1973, who upon celebrating their 50th high school reunion in August, donated to the LWHS community:

  • $500 for Music Boosters
  • $500 for Theatre/Drama
  • $500 for PTSA Council-wide senior scholarships
  • $1500 for Teacher/classroom grants

I am also happy to report that YOU donated nearly $13,000 in Pass the Pouch funds this fall. After matching gifts are tallied we expect that number to rise to nearly $15,000! As a community we have much to be thankful for. But donations alone are not enough to keep our community moving forward. It is the combination of time and talent, when added to donations that really make the magic! Whether you are a regular contributor, a single time volunteer, or have yet to contribute, there is always space for YOU! We are happy to meet with you, know you, and celebrate all we collectively have to be thankful for at LWHS. Best wishes for a happy, healthy, and thankful Thanksgiving!

In Community,

Colleen Rutherford

LWHS PTSA President

Lake Washington High School Theatre Presents: The Outsiders

December 1st, 2nd, 8th & 9th at 7pm

Based on the 1967 coming-of-age novel by S.E. Hinton, Christopher Sergel's stage adaptation deals with real people, seen through the eyes of young Ponyboy, a Greaser on the wrong side of life, caught up in territorial battles between his tough, underprivileged family and friends and the have-it-made rich kids, the "Socs." While the novel is widely read in middle school classrooms, the play carries a PG rating due to content including violence, murder, and suicide; minimum recommended viewing age for The Outsiders is 10 years.

Tickets on sale now! Additional information on the LWHS Theatre Website

Reminders

Call for Volunteer Photographers!

LWHS PTSA is looking for adults to provide brief senior portrait sessions for students in need.

We know many parents in our community are skilled amateur photographers: if that describes you, would you be willing to volunteer your time and talent to help seniors gain access to this tradition? Some seniors might not be able to afford portrait sessions, and your help could make a difference in their lives.

  • Our goal is to give these seniors a portrait that they would be able to use for the school yearbook...and also to give them a keepsake from this very exciting milestone year!
  • The deadline for yearbook submissions is January 5th, 2024, so all portrait sessions would need to be completed before the December winter break.
  • We want to emphasize that you don't need to be a professional photographer: we're just looking for folks who are good with a camera.

Please let us know if you're interested in helping out, and we'll reach out to you to figure out a schedule that works with your availability: sign up here.
