Freedom Rider and Vietnam Marine Charles Person

Joining VBC Happy Hour for Black History Month is Charles Person, one of the original Freedom Riders. Charles and others left Washington, D.C. by bus in 1961 to discover whether America would abide by a Supreme Court decision that ruled segregation unconstitutional in bus depots, waiting areas, restaurants, and restrooms nationwide. In Alabama, the answer was no, and Charles narrowly escaped death. From one battleground to another, Charles enlisted in the Marine Corps and...Read More>>>

The Women Behind the POW-MIA Movement of the Vietnam War

Navy veteran and author Taylor Kiland to discuss her new book, Unwavering, which tells the story of how a group of military spouses battled the government to demand information about POWs and MIAs in the Vietnam War.

In October 1969, these determined women secured a meeting with North Vietnamese officials in Paris, marking a turning point in their advocacy. The encounter, though tense, garnered national and international attention, thrusting them into the spotlight. They became activists, challenging the Pentagon, the State Department, and the White House to prioritize the return of missing and captive men. Their efforts led...Read More>>>

Happy Year of the Dragon!

February 10 marks the first day of Tet, the Vietnamese Lunar New Year. It actually celebrates the first day of spring, which comes early in Vietnam, and thus is like New Year and Easter combined. Tet mostly follows the Chinese zodiac, which means 2024 is the Year of the Dragon, fifth in the 12-animal cycle.

GoExploreVietnam has a good summary of how Tet is celebrated in...

Platoonmates Killed in Jordan Saw Army Service as a Life Ladder

The New York Times has an excellent article on Kennedy Sanders and Breonna Moffett, two Army Reserve Engineers who were killed last week in a drone attack by an Iranian-backed militia. These women were drawn to the military for the opportunities and level playing field it offered.

First-Hand Account of Kamikaze Attack

Last week, at Jay Wertz’s WWII History Conference in Lakeland, Florida, I got to meet 107-year-old Bill Monfort, who joined the Navy in 1935 and served on the USS Claxton, among other ships. Bill told the story of one of the first Kamikaze attacks of the war, which was on his ship in the Battle of Leyte Gulf in 1944. When the Japanese suicide plane crashed and exploded in the water alongside to starboard, Bill said, Damage Control Officer Charlie Nelson saved the crews’ lives and the ship by...Read the story on DestroyerHistory.org>>>
