19th Annual Holocaust Art and Writing Contest

Congratulations to junior Emily Kuwaye! Last month, she was recognized as the 1st prize winner in the poetry division of the 19th annual Holocaust Art and Writing Contest. This international contest is sponsored by the Rodgers Center for Holocaust Education at Chapman University, the 1939 Society, the Samueli Foundation, and Yossie & Dana Hollander. The contest drew entries from 225 schools across 31 states and 8 other countries. Emily's entry was the first from Hawaii to receive 1st place recognition!
Contest participants were asked to become a "Messenger of Memory" for the Holocaust survivors and perpetuate a survivor's story through art or written word. Emily's poem, "Your Memory," poignantly reflects Cesia Kingston's survivor testimony while also interweaving memories of her own visit in the summer of 2014 to Auschwitz. Emily was drawn to the inspiring story, noting Mrs. Kingston's drive to survive and take care of her sister as "powerful."
While the awards ceremony was held on March 9 at Chapman University in California, a live stream of the presentation was made available. A video of Emily reciting her poem was shared when she was announced as the high school division winner. In addition to her cash prize of $400, Emily is also invited to an all-expenses paid study trip to Los Angeles in June, where she will join other contest winners, touring the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust, the Museum of Tolerance, the Japanese American National Museum, and other sites in Los Angeles. Amazing work, Emily!

This morning's upper chapel was highlighted by a baptism. With Mr. Kaji and Mr. Montgomery alongside him, fourth grader Erik Chun confessed his faith in Jesus. We celebrate Erik's decision to follow Christ!

>>Pathway of Hope Collection: For their next service project, Student Council is honored to support the
Salvation Army's Pathway of Hope program. From April 11 to 13, Student Council will be collecting donations of canned food, toothpaste/toothbrushes, shampoo, and body wash. The Pathway of Hope program helps individuals and families in transition to break the cycle of poverty and drug addiction. A special thank you to Director Anna Stone (mother of Sam Stone '17) for her role in this mission!

>>PTG Spring Fundraiser: Twenty Zippy's Benefit Fundraiser tickets ($9/each) were sent home with each student. The tickets can be redeemed for Zippy's Chili (original, vegetarian, or no-bean), Portuguese Bean Soup, Meat Sauce, or Zippy's Pancake Mix. The fundraiser ends on Monday, April 9!

Final touches on cookbook collaboration
: Mrs. Kaji's kindergarten class finished up illustrating and coloring the remaining recipes for the KCS/Manoa Senior Care cookbook collaboration. During their Tuesday morning visit, Ahlayna-Marie Castro, Emi Yoshino, and Charlie Bawden worked on coloring Auntie Diane's Spam Fried Saimin. With all the residents' recipes and drawings complete, KCS will now work on organizing and printing the cookbooks!
