May 2024
Last October we celebrated when a few major projects wrapped up: Richwood Rd. Interchange Improvements, I-71/75 Pavement Rehab, and Mt. Zion Rd. Interchange Improvements. Those projects are all undergoing corrective work but are largely complete.

Did you know that the Mt. Zion Rd. Interchange Improvements project is actually one of a larger series of projects aimed at improving the KY 536 corridor from US 42 in Boone County to KY 17 in Kenton County? Read on to learn more.
Current Projects

There are two projects currently in progress along KY 536.

One of these is taking place on KY 536 from west of the KY 1303 (Bristow Rd.) intersection to west of Williamswoods Dr. This project began in April of this year and is expected to be complete in Spring 2027.

You can look forward to a host of improvements that will help you get where you need to go faster and safer, while also accommodating the growing population and increased traffic this stretch has seen in recent years. We’ll widen the road from two to four lanes, build a shared-use path on both sides of KY 536, widen a nearby overpass bridge, and do drainage work. Two roundabouts will also be added: one at the intersection of KY 536 and KY 1303, and the other at the intersection of KY 536 and Hogrefe Rd.

This project will reduce traffic congestion, improve efficiency, improve bicycle and pedestrian connectivity, and increase safety.
The second ongoing project is taking place on KY 536 between US 25 (Dixie Hwy) and KY 1303 (Bristow Rd.). This project began in 2021 and is expected to be completed in July 2024.

This project includes widening the road from two lanes to four lanes, building a shared-use path on both sides of KY 536 (that means there will be a safe sidewalk for pedestrians and bicycles), widening a nearby bridge deck, adding a right turn lane on Toebben Dr., and working on traffic signal and drainage improvements. Two roundabouts will also be built: one will be at the intersection of KY 536 and Sigmon Ln., and the other will be on KY 536 about one-third of a mile west of Turkeyfoot Rd.

This project will improve safety, support better traffic flow, improve connectivity, and improve sight distance for drivers.

In just a minute you’ll read about two more upcoming projects on KY 536. It’s all part of a huge effort to bring a booming KY 536 corridor into the future.
Completed Projects

Remember the Mt. Zion Rd. Interchange Improvement project we mentioned? This interchange improvement project at KY 536 and I-71/75 wrapped up in October 2023. The project included adding a double crossover diamond (DCD), widening the road from three lanes to nine lanes, and constructing a shared-use path on the north side of KY 536 and a sidewalk on the south side.
The other completed project is an improvement project on KY 536 from US 42 to Tiburon Dr. that was completed in October 2020. This project included widening the road from two lanes to four lanes, adding a shared-use path, and constructing two roundabouts.

We know driving through construction work zones isn’t easy, but the end result ultimately means safer roads for everyone!
Upcoming Projects

Finally, let’s take a look at those last two projects along KY 536. They’ll be getting underway very soon.

The first, slated to begin later this summer, will focus on improving safety and connectivity on KY 1303 near KY 536.

The second kicks off by the summer of 2025 and takes place on KY 536 from Williamswoods Dr. to KY 17.

It sounds like a lot – and it is! These projects are taking years to complete. At the end, though, this highly-traveled and rapidly growing area is going to be safer for motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists, and travel will be easier, smoother and faster.

As always, we’ll keep you informed so you can plan ahead. Be sure to keep an eye on the KYTC District 6 social media accounts (Facebook and X), as well as the Driving Northern Kentucky Progress website and social media handles, for traffic impact updates for the KY 536 projects and others in the area. And the team is hard at work building a website dedicated to the improvements on KY 536, where you’ll be able to see project maps, timelines, progress, real-time traffic and more.
Stay Safe

School’s out and vacations are in! Please drive carefully and be aware of work zones and hazards as you drive this summer. Avoid distractions like cell phones, makeup, food, and anything else that takes your attention away from the road. Drive safely and enjoy your summer!

Please be aware of these active work zones. You can find updated travel advisory information at or at the KYTC District 6 Roadshow.
