Bear Flag RadioChris Towne

Chris Town has a Valentine for all of us-- he's back on the air beginning Tuesday, February 14.

Chris says, "For over 31 years KVMR has given me the opportunity to wear many hats. After hosting and producing a wide spectrum of programs for community radio I'm starting a new adventure. On Valentine's Day I'll be debuting my new program, Bear Flag Radio ~ music from, by, about, and recorded in the Golden State of California. Each show will feature a specific artist, topic or genre. The first show features Grammy winner & California girl, Bonnie Raitt. The last 1/2 hour of each show I've dubbed "95959," featuring local and regional artists. And filling in the cracks will be "BearTrax," presenting, well, you'll have to tune in to find out. Join me Tuesdays biweekly, from 10 till noon for Bear Flag Radio."

That's Chris in the old studio on Spring St.

Groove Cafe David James

Here's David James, biking across France at 18! On his travels he learned how to spit fire after spending the night with street performers. He says, “Hey, everyone was doing it! ...Everyone was so friendly and hospitable. They took me in everywhere I went. The French country folks must’ve thought I was lost and took pity on me. I was riding with saddlebags and sleeping stuff on the bike, which nobody does in France. In France, if you ride, you ride light and fast and with your peloton and chic riding jersey. I must’ve looked pretty odd.” He made it to Paris. “The roads were really rough pavement all the way. But there is nothing like the night sky, sleeping on a haystack in an open field in the middle of the countryside, or being invited for lunch by the owners of the town boulangerie. What a meal.... and I still have the bike!” Check out David's first Groove Cafe show this Tuesday, February 14th, noon-2pm.

Archive Treats: A Special Series from The Climate Report

Recently, KVMR's award-winning public affairs show "The Climate Report" produced a series of shows reporting on a ground-breaking study that was released just this past fall. The brand new Sierra Nevada Climate Vulnerability Assessment is the first time ever that a targeted research team has looked at exactly what the expected effects of climate change will be in our unique Sierra Nevada region. The info is required reading for anyone planning to live in the area, as they predicted the anticipated changes to our environment, our people, and our economy, along with providing a county by county grade on climate change resiliency. One thing's for sure, things are going to change. Check out The Climate Report episodes for 9/22/22, 10/13/22, 10/27/22, 11/10/22, and 12/8/22. The Climate Report broadcasts every 2nd and 4th Thursday at 6:30pm, following the KVMR Evening News and before Democracy Now!

Martin Webb with Juju, KVMR's Pet Membership Director, and companion of Melissa Seibold-- KVMR's former Business Sponsorship Manager. Martin got Juju's 'sniff of approval,' so we're good to go!

Martin Webb, host of The Climate Report, joins KVMR's staff as Business Sponsorship Manager. We are sad to say goodbye to Melissa Seibold, an incredible asset to KVMR as our previous Business Sponsorship Manager, but Melissa had to quickly relocate to take care of family after an emergency. We wish her all the best and love her very much, forever and always! Sending KVMR airhugs to Melissa, and good vibes to Martin, who has tiny big shoes to fill.

Martin writes: Both KVMR and solar focus on keeping our community healthy, independent, sustainable, and powered with good energy. I've been wanting to transition into a nonprofit career environment, and this is simply growing tighter with a family I already knew. Please actively support our underwriters, as they are the ones actively supporting KVMR every day of the year! And remember, if you or someone you know is currently suffering from not being a KVMR business sponsor, please contact me today and we can stage an intervention.

KVMR's History Project

KVMR turns 45 this year. It's got us thinking about the PAST and looking to the FUTURE

Bringing up baby-- KVMR, maybe 1980, at the American Victorian Museum

Do you remember KVMR's golden olden days? While we're making plans to celebrate our, uh, maturity we find ourself reflecting upon our roots. We want to put together a history of KVMR– and by association the cultural history of Our Town–starting with David Osborne & Charles Woods, The American Victorian Museum, and the Banner Mountain radio shack. Did you go to the brunches and parties hosted by Charles and David in the 70s & 80s? Do you remember how KVMR moved to the AVM and got actualized? Please reply to this email– I’d love to hear from you!

David Osborne & Charles Woods wrote the grant to create community radio station KVMR. They bought the historic foundry building when it was on the precipice of demolition, and turned it into The American Victorian Museum (now The Miners Foundry) to save the historic building. They were instrumental in protecting the culture and frontier bohemianism of Nevada City and our immediate surrounds, and we want to celebrate the success of these two visionaries. If you remember these early days, we would love to hear from you!

Incoming! Fresh Swag for a New Year!

"FM signals and those of broadcast television…travel out to space at the speed of light. Any eavesdropping alien civilization will know all about our TV programs (probably a bad thing), will hear all our FM music (probably a good thing), and know nothing of the politics of AM talk-show hosts (probably a safe thing)."

~Neil deGrasse Tyson

KVMR is Out Of This World!

This tee-shirt will be available in the upcoming KVMR Is Out Of This World Membership Drive. When we change the swag we don't usually change back, so if you haven't got the old tee get it while you can. And ditto for when the new one comes out! Donate

Bandanas Are BACK

We are still working on the color schemes for our latest, most multi-purpose item-- the bandana! It's a napkin, scarf, hankie, facemask, disguise, accomplice and accessoryclearly a fine something that all people need! The final colors will not likely be literally moving-- but you get the idea. KVMR is FAR OUT!

Brother, Can You Spare a MATCH?!

KVMR's 2023 Winter Membership Drive is Tuesday, February 28, through Sunday, March 5th. If you'd like your generous gift to make an even bigger difference-- consider offering a MATCH. A 'match' is when you offer to donate money raised by others. For example: 'matching' the first 10 donations to a show... It doubles your donation and provides the most compelling incentive for others to give. Matching dollars transform KVMR Membership Drives from long winded beg-a-thons to fun-loving celebrate-a-thons. But we can only do it with your support.

KVMR Volunteers are THE BEST

There are a lot of great ways to volunteer at KVMR, both on and off air. KVMR offers the most meaningful, vibrant volunteer opportunities in the area, for a wide spectrum of ages and skill levels. We love our volunteers so much, and and are so grateful for the downtown hub where we gather to create the amazing community resource of KVMR. It's music, and so much more.

Meet front desk volunteer, Margaret Baker!

In Margaret's own words:

After I retired, and then after I lost my husband, I cycled through a number of volunteer positions. I had always listened to KVMR occasionally, more during the summer for the music and talk, but after the article about a front desk volunteer who I happened to know I signed up as a volunteer. I became more committed to the importance of community radio as a reflection of and service to the community. Pre-Covid I substituted at the front desk and tabling at events. Now I have a regularly scheduled front desk time. Thank you, Margaret! We appreciate you!

Would you like to get involved with KVMR? Join a class and become a broadcaster (deadline for February's music broadcaster training course is Monday, Feb 13th!) or contact Marni Marshall, our volunteer coordinator, to get involved, volunteer@kvmr.org.

Listener-support creates the possibility of community radio. We're here because you turn us on. We love you KVMR family!
