At the start of each new year, NPR's Public Editor, Kelly McBride, contacts journalists at NPR to ask about their reporting priorities. She received answers on topics from the election and the economy, which every news organization will cover, to beats that get less coverage, such as climate solutions and labor and the workforce. Today's Public Editor column provides insights into how NPR will cover big news stories in 2024.

NPR Student Podcast Challenge opens, now including 4th graders |
Attention teachers and students—the opening bell has rung for NPR's sixth annual student podcast challenge. Since the beginning, the contest has included students in grades 5 through 12. But elementary teachers have asked, what about younger kids? So by popular demand, this year 4th graders will have their own contest. So gear up with a microphone, headphones, and a recording device, and find a story to tell. Entries are due by May 3 and NPR has resources to help:

February focus: Black History |
February marks Black History Month, a tradition that got its start in the Jim Crow era and was officially recognized in 1976 as part of U.S. bicentennial celebrations. It aims to honor the contributions of African Americans and to recognize their sacrifices. Several of NPR's show episodes and news stories are featuring Black history and topics of interest.
