KDIGO at the 61st ERA Congress

KDIGO was excited to attend the 61st ERA Congress in Stockholm, Sweden, and to take part in numerous opportunities to learn and connect.

This year, KDIGO held three events covering a range of topics. The first was the scientific symposium, "KDIGO Update - The Impact of Viral Infections in Patients with Renal Diseases and the Role of Vaccination in Kidney Care." The symposium was chaired by Steven Chadban, MD (Australia), with speakers Uyen Huynh-Do, MD (China), Michel Jadoul, MD (Belgium), and Deepali Kumar, MD (Canada). The symposium featured a series of case studies, followed by a panel discussion and Q&A session.

The session "KDIGO 2024 Guideline on Lupus Nephritis (LN): A Roundtable Discussion" featured KDIGO LN Guideline Co-Chair Brad Rovin, MD (United States) and Work Group Members Vladimir Tesař, MD (Czech Republic), Juan Manuel Mejía Vilet, MD (Mexico), and Isabelle Ayoub, MD (United States) with a patient perspective on living with lupus by Jeanette Andersen (Denmark).

In "KDIGO Update: PKD Guidelines 2024," KDIGO Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD) Guideline Co-Chairs Olivier Devuyst, MD (Switzerland) and Vicente Torres, MD (United States) and Work Group Members Djalila Mekahli, MD (Belgium) and Roser Torra, MD (Spain) shared the latest science and a preview of the upcoming guideline, with presentations on adults and children with ADPKD, and on issues specific to women with ADPKD. The session recording is available to registered congress attendees on the ERA website.

This year's congress also offered the chance to film KDIGO Glomerular Diseases Guideline Work Group Members Marina Vivarelli, MD (Italy) and Jonathan Barratt, MD (United Kingdom) sharing key highlights from the congress on complement-mediated kidney disease and IgA Nephropathy. Watch both videos on the series playlist.

Beyond the sessions, the KDIGO booth was a lively spot to connect with colleagues and friends and to share the latest resources from the KDIGO ANCA-Associated Vasculitis (AAV), Lupus Nephritis, and Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Guideline Updates. KDIGO looks forward to attending the 62nd ERA Congress in Vienna, Austria, next year.

KDIGO 2024 Guideline for Chronic Kidney Disease: Key Messages for Primary Care Physicians

On-Demand Video

KDIGO is pleased to share a new video with Xavier Cos, MD (Spain), who shares key insights and messages for primary care physicians about the timely diagnosis of CKD and prompt initiation of its treatment.

Dr. Cos highlights the importance of early detection of CKD and the means for its proper staging and risk stratification. Most importantly, Dr. Cos details the medical approaches and therapies that can effectively reduce kidney and cardiovascular risks, as summarized in the recently published KDIGO 2024 CKD Guideline. Dialysis-Related Amyloidosis (DRA) Video Series

On-Demand Video Series

KDIGO has released a four-part video series on DRA, which includes three presentations by global experts Suguru Yamamoto, MD (Japan), Jeffrey Silberzweig, MD (United States), and Junichiro James Kazama, MD (Japan). The series includes a roundtable discussion moderated by Glenn Chertow, MD (United States), with the presenters and Yusuke Tsukamoto, MD (Japan).

Patients who have been on maintenance dialysis for many years may encounter added symptoms and disease burden that are often masked by age-related health decline. DRA offers a prime example of how proper symptom detection, careful review of the patient's clinical presentation, and meaningful approaches can provide not only symptom relief but also slow the progression of the comorbid disease.

This series, available with Japanese subtitles, underscores the key conclusion from the KDIGO Symptom-Based Complications in Dialysis Controversies Conference: proper symptom management can lead to improved quality of life and should be a fundamental part of dialysis care. Watch the series.
