  Director's Corner

Dear Cougar Family,

Thank you to all the parents who attended the KCC Glow Run event last weekend.  We had a blast!!

As a reflection of the week, I'd like to encourage you to think about this:  as you drive in to drop off your little ones every morning, take note that our national, state and school flags fly high.  That is how high we need to fly if we are to reach our physical, material and spiritual goals in life.  I encourage you to take some time this weekend and reflect on your priorities and goals to see where beneficial adjustments need to be made. In life we tend to run to and from as a daily routine and sometimes forget to analyze whether or not we are still on track toward our ambitions in life.

With that said, as always, I want to thank you and encourage you to continue to support our school.  Our students and staff need your time, feedback and contributions to keep our school in the best possible position to serve our students and families.  Education is an investment in our children and our future.   Please help us make our school a great investment for your family!

One way to do this is to get involved with the upcoming Great American Teach-In at KCC-SE.  Please be on the lookout for an email regarding the Teach-In if you would like to come in and share your knowledge with our young scholars.

 IB PYP CORNER

Dear Cougar Family,

Our 3rd Annual Great American Teach-In event is just around the corner. We cordially invite parents and community members to come in and share information about their careers, hobbies, and special talents with our students. To accommodate more speakers,  we are stretching the event out over the course of two weeks. We will begin next week (11/17-11/21) and finish the week after Thanksgiving break (12/1-12/5). If you would like to participate, please follow the link below and sign up. Please email me at eelliott@kidscc.org if you have any questions.

Also, our school is scheduled to participate in the Hillsborough County Charter School Battle of the Books competition. This competition is open only to fourth grade students and will take place in May.  The KCC-SE team will be selected in April based on professor recommendations and knowledge of the Battle Books. The school has purchased a set of the books for each fourth grade classroom. However, the books may also be checked out from the public library or purchased for your child. The link below will take you to the Hillsborough County public library page that contains the list of books and a description of each one.

Inquiry With Ms. Nattalie

-where we ask questions and discover answers

1st Grade: This week we worked on learning what a hypothesis is and created a hypothesis for the science experiment the class will be presenting.

2nd Grade: The students created concept webs to show what they know and what they are interested in. We will use this to develop a science project.

The inquiry program will incorporate technology, science, and research methods to teach students to discover independently. The goal of this program is to develop life-long students who are driven to ask questions and think critically!

TOYS FOR TOTS

SouthShore Toys for TOTS

We are delighted to be a drop off location for SouthShore Toys for TOTS.

The Marine Toys for Tots program collects new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distributes those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community.  We know from the smiles on children's faces and from the grateful appreciation of their parents that the simple gift of a new toy can make a tremendous difference in the life of a child.  If you like, you may bring in an unwrapped toy to our campus by December 12th.  There will be a box in the office.

The SouthShore Toys for TOTS collection party will be at The Alley on Big Bend Road on December 14th from 3pm to 7pm. The Marines and Santa & Mrs. Claus will be in attendance.  There will be Music, Food and Fun!

Good of the group

Here is some news coming indirectly from our fabulous Spanish teacher, Miss Jazmin. She shared this information with her class, and my daughter promptly came home to correct my behavior. Rather than tell you what my daughter said, here is an article that is clearer.

I took it a step further and here is a link to an article that talks about the potential health effects of using a laptop on your lap.

To ensure continuity and order of volunteers during school hours and/or during other school related activities, office and administrative staff will adhere to the following guidelines:

  1. 1.  All volunteers must sign in and sign out at the front office pursuant to Kid's Community College policy for visitors outlined in the student handbook.
  1. 2.  All volunteers must have evidence of proper background screening OR must be escorted by a badged staff member at all times.  At no time should volunteers be alone with students.
  1. 3.  A list of volunteer opportunities and the number of volunteers needed shall be maintained by each Campus Director or other campus designee.
  1. 4.  Any volunteer opportunities during the school day and/or during other school related activities shall be pre-approved by the Campus Director or other campus designee.

  1. 6.  At no time should a volunteer be on campus for more than a two-hour block of time to volunteer, unless the additional time has been approved by the Campus Director or other campus designee.

Allowance?

Many parents give their children an allowance in order to help them practice managing money. However, chores are assigned in families for many different reasons. Chores can help kids learn responsibility. Additionally, they let family members work together to take care of the household. Children learn they are part of the household and must help to maintain it. Since the two (allowances and chores) aren't really related, it may make more sense to keep them separate.

Paying your child for chores could also have some unexpected negative results. When he doesn't feel like washing the dishes, for instance he might decide to take a pay cut. You may hear statements like "I really don't need the money so I'm not going to do it this week". You many also run into the problem where your child expects to be paid for everything he does!

Many experts recommend that if you decide to give your child an allowance, tell him that he can count on it each week. Also when you assign chores, let him know it is nonnegotiable and you expect him to do the job so that your household can run smoothly. In the end it is your decision as a parent what you feel would work best for your family.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Parking & Car Line Procedures

As you know, we have been working diligently to improve carline wait times both in the morning and in the afternoon. We have had many wonderful families that have donated their time and energy to helping everything run smoothly. You may have also noticed our beautiful new signs, donated and put in place by Casey and Cali and their generous family.

Important things to remember about carline:

*Traffic is ONE WAY ONLY during carline hours

*During morning drop off, DO NOT park on the side of the building unless you plan on remaining in the building until 8:30

*Please arrive at your scheduled time in the afternoon

Board of Directors

Board of Directors Contacts:

Sweta Patel, Chairman = spatel@kidscc.org

Andrea Atienza, Parent Liaison = aatienza@kidscc.org

AGENDA - The Board agenda is set by the Board and is prepared, posted and distributed at least one (1) week before the meeting.  At any time before the meeting, a parent, guardian or a member of the Board can request to add an item to the agenda by contacting either the Secretary or the Board President.  The final agenda is approved at the start of the Board meeting.  Parents and guardians are also allowed to introduce new items or concerns during the time of Floor Discussions and Announcements.  Although the Board may not comment on the items introduced at that time, they can decide to act on it in a future meeting.

PUBLIC COMMENT - The Board of Directors welcomes participation in meetings. The public is welcome to comment on matters appearing on the agenda at the time they are called. The public is also welcome to comment on matters, which are not on the agenda when the President calls for "Public Input for the Good of the District." This time is provided for the public to introduce any topic within the District's jurisdiction. Because these are non-agenda matters, generally no discussion or comment by the Board should be expected except to properly refer the matter for review as appropriate, but no action will be taken at this meeting. Public Comment will be limited to five minutes per speaker. If you wish to speak, please step up to the podium at the appropriate time & begin by stating your name & address.

CONSENT ITEMS - All items are approved by a single action. There will be no separate discussion of those items unless an item is removed at the request of any Director or member of the public. Those items removed will be considered at the end of the consent agenda or be placed on the action agenda for the next meeting.

CONFLICT RESOLUTION AND COMPLAINTS

The ultimate purpose of our internal complaint procedure is to encourage the healthy growth and development of Kid's Community College.  Conflict is often a part of any organization and may arise in any community. An effective process for resolving conflict is therefore both consistent with the vision and mission of KCC, and an essential component of the communication model that our school has adopted.  KCC recognizes that effective communication is paramount in effective conflict resolution and therefore strongly encourages students, parents, associates and the community to review and follow our conflict resolution process, which is found here:

KCC Conflict Resolution.
