Litter Kills Wildlife

Researchers estimate that over one million animals die each year after ingesting, or becoming entrapped in, improperly disposed trash.

Plastic litter is the most common killer of animals and marine animals are the most notably affected. Each year over 100,000  drown after becoming entangled in or digesting plastic litter.

How to Make a "Litter" Bit of Difference in the Summer!

Keep a plastic shopping bag handy to collect waste on the go. Parking lots don't always provide receptacles for tailgaters, and bins can be hard to come by at festivals. Stash a plastic bag or two in your bag to collect trash and recyclables.

If you see litter on the ground, please pick it up! This one is pretty simple! We can't always expect someone else to come along and pick it up. if we want change we have to BE that change!

When going out to the lake or to any outdoor event Bring beverages and food in reusable containers. This prevents containers from becoming litter in the first place!

Become friends with your neighbors. Organize a block party cleanup of your street, and take ownership of litter prevention in your neighborhood.

Share articles about the importance of litter prevention on social media. Show your friends not only that eradication of litter is important to you but also seeing the topic popping up their feeds is a constant reminder to your followers that litter is not okay!

Report litter and illegal dumping!

Craft of the Month

Patriotic Windsock

Instructions

  1. Cut out several stars from white cardstock paper with your star paper punch.
  2. Use a glue stick to glue each of your white stars on a toilet paper tube painted dark blue. You can align them in rows evenly, or spread them around your paper in any way you fancy.
  3. Cut out three 18-inch sections of red crepe paper and three 18-inch sections of white crepe paper. Glue the red and white crepe paper on the bottom one-third of the tube in a red, white, red, white pattern.
  4. Cut a red paper strip handle that is 1-inch by 8 1/2-inches. Add a generous amount of extra strength glue stick on each end of the paper strip and attach it inside the top of the windsock for a handle.
