QUARTERLY ISSUES DEADLINE EXTENDED

FCC CITES TECHINCAL DIFFICULITIES

The FCC announced late this afternoon that all items required to be placed in the Online Public Inspection File ("OPIF") between January 1 and January 31, 2023 may now be uploaded to the OPIF by January 31, 2023 and be considered timely. The FCC released a Public Notice today announcing that the OPIF filing system has been experiencing technical difficulties since at least January 1, 2023, necessitating the extension.

This extension impacts, among other things, broadcasters' Quarterly Issues-Programs Lists, normally due on January 10, 2023, and television stations' 2022 annual certification of compliance with the commercial limits in children's programming, which would normally be due on January 30, 2023. Note that the extension does not affect the filing deadline for television stations' 2022 Annual Children's Television Programming Report due on January 30, 2023, because that filing is submitted via the FCC's Licensing and Management System and then is automatically transferred into the OPIF. Accordingly, television stations should be sure to file that Report by the normal January 30th deadline.

"The Opportunities Ahead

A Broadcast Veterans View of the Future"

with Steve Wexler, Leadership Coach, Good Karma Brands

Steve Wexler rode his bike to WTMJ in Milwaukee when he was 17 years old and asked if he could be on the radio. That began a broadcast career that included on-air work at WTMJ and WISN in Milwaukee before beginning his management journey, building talk stations in Milwaukee for Hearst (WISN) and Portland, OR for King Broadcasting (KGW). He later programmed KING/Seattle and returned home to WTMJ as program director in 1993 for Journal Communications. Journal promoted Steve to market manager positions in Tucson, AZ and Omaha, NE where he began overseeing TV and Radio operations, including WTMJ-TV/Milwaukee. In 2014, he was named head of the 36-station, 8-market Journal Radio Group, a position he continued through Journal’s merger with E.W. Scripps. In 2018, he led the sale of the radio group to four different broadcast companies, including Good Karma Brands in Milwaukee, where remained as market manager. Steve is now coaching teams and talent at Good Karma as their Leadership Coach.

THIS WEEKS MEMBER PIC

RETURN TO FAMILY ROOTS

Sports is more than an interest to Brittany DeShá Rowe. You could say it’s in her blood.

Now she will be sharing that passion with the residents of Eastern Kentucky, southern West Virginia and southwestern Virginia, as she takes over as Assistant Sports Director with Mountain Top Media, effective Monday, Jan. 9. She will work alongside Sports Director Teddy Paynter to provide the most comprehensive sports coverage in the region.

A Pike County native, Rowe grew up surrounded by sports. Her father, David Rowe, was a basketball coach at Johns Creek High School in the 1980s and later served as head basketball coach for Pike County Central High School from 1993 to 2007. Her late mother, Kelly Rowe, was head cheerleading coach for Pike Central from 1993 to 2008, then head cheerleading coach at the University of Pikeville from 2008 to 2011. And her grandfather, Morris Justice, was a baseball, basketball and football coach at Mullins High School in the 1960s and 1970s.

She also has her own background in sports, being a cheerleader for UPike from 2008 to 2012 and later coaching cheerleading at several schools in the community.

"Growing up in a sports family, the love and passion for sports has always been in my blood,” Rowe said. “I am excited to transition over to our sports team here at Mountain Top Media and continue to grow us to be your number one source for sports. It will be great to be back on the sidelines!"

She has worked as a marketing specialist for six years and a radio personality for five years. She has been with Mountain Top Media since 2018.

"Brittany has been an invaluable member of our team for several years, and this is a great opportunity for her to help us expand our sports coverage,” Mountain Top Media President Cindy May Johnson said. “I know she'll bring her own perspective and personality to the position, and we're looking forward to it."

Rowe is a 2008 graduate of Pike Central, and a 2014 graduate of the University of Pikeville, where she majored in Communications and Mass Media.

SALES TIP OF THE WEEK

SURVEY SAYS...

With today’s tip, we’re not sure whether to laugh or to cry.  According to the 2022 version of an annual study conducted by IPSOS – Advertising is NO LONGER the least trusted profession for the second year in a row!  Cue the band, break out the champagne!

The 2022 edition of the worldwide most-trusted professions study ranks advertising executives third from the bottom, just ahead of politicians and cabinet officials, but hey, that’s progress!  Here is the chart for the most trusted, to least trusted in order:

Despite having some fun with these survey results, even at our own expense, there is no denying the importance of trust in the work we do consulting our advertising partners.  According to research from our friends at Borrell Associates these are the top five things, in order of importance, that influence radio buyers' trust in their rep:

1.    Ability to describe audience/capabilities of media product

2.    Overall knowledge of marketing and advertising

3.    Knowledge of the client’s business or industry

4.    Connection to the local market

5.    Personal manner (personality, eye contact, handshake)

The great news is that you are in complete control of each of those five elements.  As you head into the weekend, find comfort in the fact that we are no longer the least trusted profession, and commit yourself to focusing on the five things advertisers look at when determining your trustworthiness.
