KBA 2023 : COVINGTON, KY

ANNUAL CONFERENCE TO BEGIN ON SUNDAY

KBA’s Annual Membership Conference is just days away! Whether you are coming for the entire conference or popping in for an event, we can’t wait to see each of you September 24-25th at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center in Covington.

Simply put, the annual conference is a reunion of broadcasters from around the state. A once a year opportunity to see old friends, make new friends, swap tall tales, celebrate successes, learn something new and honor our fellow broadcasters for their hard work, careers and achievements.

This years conference has a game show theme that you will notice throughout. Game shows are all about winning! This year, we are giving you countless opportunities to win prizes and most importantly… opportunities to pick up something in a breakout session or from a conversation with a colleague, that will help you WIN at your station.

If you have any last minute conference questions or registration changes, please contact Amber Rhodes.

BIENNIAL OWNERSHIP REPORT

WINDOW TO FILE OPENS OCTOBER 2ND

The Federal Communication Commission's (FCC) Media Bureau recently released a reminder to commercial and noncommercial broadcasters of their upcoming requirement to file their 2023 biennial ownership reports on FCC Form 2100, Schedule 323 or 323-E, respectively. The reports are required to be filed by every commercial and noncommercial full power TV, Class A, LPTV and AM and FM station. The window for filing ownership reports will open on October 2, 2023, and all reports must be submitted by December 1, 2023.

Ensuring that these reports are timely filed is important not only for compliance with the reporting rules but also for stations’ future renewal applications. Stations must certify on their renewal applications that they have filed their biennial reports as required by the Commission’s rules or disclose violations. Failing to file ownership reports on time can raise issues for stations during the license renewal process, including potential processing delays. The FCC has publicly stated that, as part of its review of license renewal applications, staff will review whether licensees have filed their biennial ownership reports and whether they have certified truthfully concerning compliance with the filing requirement. The FCC also has previously stated that it intends to take enforcement actions against broadcasters that fail to file timely and complete biennial ownership reports, and it may take additional actions against any broadcaster that makes a false certification on its renewal application regarding the filing of the reports.

The FCC regards reporting ownership information as a fundamental obligation of broadcast licensees, so it is important to timely file your reports. For further information about biennial ownership reports, please visit the Media Bureau's Form 323/323-E website, which has links to forms and instructions, FAQs, and information sessions.

SEVEN MOUNTAINS MEDIA

INVESTING IN KENTUCKY & WEST VIRGINIA

Station owner Kerby Confer is involved in a pair of deals in Bowling Green, KY, and Parkersburg, WV.

In Bowling Green, Confer’s Seven Mountains Media is acquiring Forever Communications’ four-station cluster – classic country WLYE (94.1), country WBVR (96.7), hot AC WUHU (107.1), oldies WBGN (1340), and its corresponding FM translator W233CZ at 94.5.

Confer owns Seven Mountains Media, along with his wife Judith, and daughter Kristen Cantrell, who operates the company. He also has a 45% stake in Forever Communications.

Seven Mountains Media will pay $1.125 million for the cluster in a deal that also includes an LMA with Royse Radio to operate classic country WLLI, Munfordville, KY (102.3), and oldies WCLU, Glasgow, KY (1490).

Seven Mountains Media also owns a cluster of radio stations in the Frankfort, KY area in addition to its holdings in Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey.

Meanwhile, Confer has filed a $700,000 deal to buy rock WHBR (103.1), CHR WXIL (95.1), country WGGE (99.1), classic rock WRZZ (106.1), news/talk WVNT (1230), and classic country WLYQ (1050) from Burbach Broadcasting. The deal also includes a pair of Parkersburg, WV-licensed translators, W278CQ at 103.5, which simulcasts WVNT; and W234DC at 94.7, which simulcasts WLYQ.

Confer has owned a 30% stake in the Frankfort cluster, and the deal sees him buy out Nicholas Galli’s 40% stake and Donald Alt’s 30% share.

ARE YOU INTERESTING?

Last week, I had the privilege of participating in a leadership meeting with a broadcast company that epitomizes what radio can be.  Live, local, and community-minded people who are passionate about what they are doing. I'm always inspired when I attend a sales meeting.  As an industry, we do great work, and it's fun to hear it firsthand.

As we discussed the frustrations in the various markets, Jeff said: “We have lots of proposals out there, but we are waiting for clients to pull the trigger.  It seems to be taking longer if they respond at all.”  Because I know Jeff well, I was able to provide some radical candor.  If your proposals aren’t generating the proper level of interest or urgency, then your proposals aren’t interesting enough.

In his book Non-Manipulative Selling, Dr. Tony Alessandra likens a sales proposal to a marriage proposal. He says, “If you weren’t reasonably certain they would say yes, then asking the question would be premature.”  The proposal should be the logical next step to making a solution to a problem come to life.  If you have “lots of proposals out there” and clients aren’t responding, you may not have identified the most pressing issue or clearly identified how your idea will solve the problem.

I love a quote from David Ogilvy, who has been called the Father of Advertising.  Ogilvy says:

“You can’t bore people into buying your product; you can only interest them in buying it.”

So, as harsh as it sounds, if they aren’t interested, we aren’t interesting.  More proposals aren’t the answer – better proposals are.  Better proposals start with a better job of uncovering the problems and pain points.

Recently, we released the all-new RAB C N A System. You can find it here on RAB.com.  There are brief instruction videos to explain the how and the why. There is also a PDF to download that should cover every possible scenario for gathering information from a client.  Each page is designed to be “stand-alone.”  You would never go through all the pages in one meeting.  The Customer Needs Analysis is no longer an event or a single meeting. It’s a process that happens over several meetings.

ChatGPT was released less than a year ago, yet there are “cottage industries” popping up trying to sell you “prompts” and “prompt cheat sheets.”  These folks have figured out that ChatGPT is only as good as the prompts you give it.  To steal an adage, “garbage in, garbage out.”

If your proposals aren’t interesting or getting immediate and passionate responses from your clients, you are likely not addressing their most important issue or the one that causes them the most pain.  That doesn’t mean using color, pictures, and some fancy font to make your proposals more interesting. It means the inputs or prompts may be off. The Customer Needs Analysis process provides valuable information for creating interesting, insightful, and impacting proposals.

If your proposals aren’t “wooing” your clients (marriage proposal analogy), it might be time to get to know them better.  The better you know them, the better you can create plans to help them. We’d love your feedback on the all-new RAB Customer Needs Analysis System. Check it out and drop me a note here.
