CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY MONTH
WLKY-TV PROFILES BLACK LEADERS
Hearst Television’s CBS affiliate WLKY-TV Louisville, Ky., is participating in “Project CommUNITY: History & Hope,” an effort to give voice to the experiences of Black seniors by uniting them with young Black journalists for probing, in-depth interviews and conversations exploring the state of race in America. The project features 28 stories, one for each day of Black History Month, with each of the company’s television stations producing at least one story for the project. WLKY will showcase a conversation between morning Anchor Caray Grace and Reverend Charles Elliott, as well as a profile of civil rights activist Mattie Jones by weekend morning Anchor Marvis Herring.

“In addition to the perspective ‘Project CommUNITY: History & Hope’ will provide viewers across Greater Louisville, WLKY is proud to continue our tradition of celebrating Black trailblazers who have worked to transform our communities,” said Glenn Haygood, WLKY president and general manager. “This year, WLKY is showcasing the strength of the spoken word by partnering with local author and poet, Hannah Drake, whose thought provoking poem “Dawn” imagines a world of transformation and unity.”

RAB LEADERSHIP MASTERCLASS
NEXT SMALL GROUP BEGINS MARCH 11, 2021
Empowering, equipping and inspiring the managers of sales teams is vital to the growth and success of an entire organization. The RAB Leadership MasterClass (LMC) is designed for that purpose. It combines the highly-acclaimed Certified Radio Sales Manager course along with monthly group coaching to address the on-going challenges our sales leadership face. With limited class size and limited number of sessions each year, this is an exclusive opportunity where managers and soon-to-be leaders build community through a support network of other managers. Completing the program is a distinction that sets them apart; they will belong to an elite group of leaders in media management.

Participants will work through CRSM certification program with live sessions hosted by Jeff Schmidt, SVP of Professional Development, RAB. These half-day sessions each week, for six consecutive weeks, minimizes time away from their team. This schedule also allows class members to put new tools into action immediately after learning, providing opportunity to share success and ask questions during weekly meetings. At the conclusion of the six-week course work, members will attend monthly one-hour group coaching sessions for eight consecutive months to review materials learned or address specific needs and challenges in their local markets.

  • Limited participation per class.
  • 3 years media sales experience required.
  • Apply today to be apart of the the inaugural class.

JEFF SCHMIDT'S SALES TIP OF THE WEEK
ARE YOU A CONVERSTIONAL NARCISSIST?
Ever get the feeling when you're in a conversation that it's all about the other person? They aren't really listening, but instead just waiting to talk. Frustrating.

In Kate Murphy's new book, You're Not Listening she shares this compelling example:

“My dog got out last week, and it took three days to find him.” How would you reply if someone shared this bit of information? Consider two options: You could say, “Oh man, my dog Sparky is always running away, too,” or you could say, “Oh no, where did you finally find him?”

The first reply about Sparky is a classic example of what sociologist Charles Derber calls a shift response, which directs attention away from the speaker and toward the respondent. To us, mentioning Sparky may seem perfectly appropriate—after all, we’ve shared a similar experience, so why wouldn’t we bring it up right away? The issue, however, is that these shift responses are usually self-referential statements, attempts to shift the conversation away from the original speaker and toward ourselves. It’s not an intentionally selfish act, but it is symptomatic of conversational narcissism, the antithesis of good listening and connection-building.

But the second reply— “Oh no, where did you finally find him?”—is more of a support response, which encourages elaboration from the speaker to help the respondent gain greater understanding. Support responses are usually not self-referential statements—or hastily offered advice—but open-ended, other-directed questions. Indeed, the best listeners are often the best questioners; you have to listen to ask an appropriate and relevant question, and then, as a consequence of posing the question, you are invested in listening to the answer.

That’s not to say you can never mention Sparky—just maybe not right away, and not until you’ve made the other person feel heard. The key is to monitor the balance of shift and support responses in your conversations, and to remember the distinct advantages of becoming a good questioner.

Even the term support response sounds so much better than shift response. And to the person you're listening to, it feels much better. Conversational Narcissism limits understanding and prevents any sense of connection.

People who ask questions end up collecting more information and stories the way others might collect stamps, shells, or coins. As a result, they tend to have something interesting to contribute to almost any discussion.

In sales, listening is how you identify opportunities.
